The Project Manager supports the structured planning and stakeholder management as expected within Waterfall Projects, although some facilitation and team empowerment from agile practices. They navigate confidently across traditional, and hybrid environments, adapting their approach to suit the delivery context and the needs of complex programs of work.
Acting as a central point of coordination between business stakeholders, product owners, and delivery teams, the Project Manager will foster collaboration, drive continuous improvement, and manage risks and dependencies across the project lifecycle. Additionally, they will play a key role in coaching teams on frameworks to ensure consistent understanding and effective practice.
The Project Manager will report to the Head of Integration Technologies in IT and will have no direct reports.
Specific accountabilities for this role include:
- Lead end-to-end delivery of digital initiatives, ensuring alignment with business objectives, scope, cost, quality and timelines.
- Oversee the management of delivery teams, which may consist of UNSW staff, contractors and vendors onshore and offshore.
- Facilitate key ceremonies such as sprint planning, daily standups, reviews, retrospectives (including backlog refinement with the Product Owner).
- Follow the release governance process for and coordinate with other teams to align work completed in squad in agreed release cycles.
- Ensure that the teams defined Ways of Working practices and templates are adopted and used consistently.
- Review and monitor the performance and status of assigned projects or workstreams. Identifying, assessing and proactively managing risks and issues and addressing any concerns or issues that may impact on the successful delivery of the project to the business area. This includes any security elements.
- Ensure that management processes, tools, techniques and personnel are in place to ensure that the transition of services, service components and packages are planned and compliant.
- Ensure that test and validation and configuration management are applied in all release and deployment activities.
- Manage, communicate and coordinate release preparation and execution activities with the Integration teams and other relevant stakeholders.
- Support the Service Owner(s) in delivery by maintaining and developing processes, standards, tools and reporting and their documentation, and proactively review the service provided to end- users and customers.
- Develop effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to develop innovative solutions that meet business needs.
- Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.
- Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
- Ensure hazards and risks psychosocial and physical are identified and controlled for tasks, projects, and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility.
Skills and experience:
- Relevant tertiary qualification with substantial experience as an IT Project Manager, Delivery Manager and Scrum Master.
- (Preferred) Prince 2 or PMP certification (e.g. Certified Scrum Master, SAFe Scrum Master or equivalent).
- Significant experience in managing multiple projects or workstreams (teams) concurrently through the complete project lifecycle, with the ability to deliver to project estimates plans.
- Proven ability to lead the implementation of robust digital strategies to deliver business outcomes and experience with driving technology change.
- Extensive knowledge of and experience in a range of application development methodologies including ‘agile’, scrum’, ‘kanban’, ‘devops’, ‘lean’ and ‘rapid’ application development methodologies.
- Sound experience with SDLC delivery tools i.e., JIRA, Confluence, etc.
- Effective analytical, business planning and budgeting skills.
- Strong leadership and effective people management skills, with experience in building effective / high performance teams along with developing and retaining staff.
- Strong interpersonal communication and negotiation skills. Able to develop effective relationships and influence key stakeholders at all levels in the organisation.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
- Comprehensive communication, consultation, influencing and negotiation skills and proven ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes.
- Demonstrated success working effectively and collaboratively on initiatives with a range of people at different levels within an organisation and partner/vendor resources.
- Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
