Why Your Role Matters:
Operational Finance’s key objectives are to support UNSW with core system and transactional (operational and general accounting) activities, and work towards standardised processes with continual improvements in systems and process to support UNSW financial management integrity and strategy.

The Manager, Finance Support Services manages the service deliverables of the Finance Support Services (FSS) team, provides leadership and support to Leads, Supervisors and team members to ensure processes and services are timely, consistent, efficient and compliant. The position has a remit to focus on providing a seamless experience for everyone accessing Finance Support Services whilst also building future capabilities that are aligned with the Business Optimisation Strategy (“BOS”).

The Manager, Finance Support Services reports directly to the Associate Director Operations & Continuous Improvement and has a number of direct reports.

Responsibilities Summary:

  • Manage and lead a team of Finance Services Leads to ensure key services are performed accurately and to a consistent high quality service delivery standard for all stakeholders.
  • Manage and facilitate the seamless onboarding of new transactional Finance services such as revenue recognition, tax operations, research and grants, period end close and management reporting.
  • Drive changes and actively manage the implementation of required projects, including streams of work for Business Optimisation Strategy (“BOS”), with consideration of target operating models, new systems and processes.
  • Build and maintain strong collaborative working relationships with key internal stakeholders to promote the role of sound financial management and its impact on organisational effectiveness.
  • Provide technical review, strategic financial advice and guidance to a range of stakeholders in relation to financial terminology and processes, to ensure compliance with Australian Accounting Standards, accounting policies and key financial measures to ensure effective financial controls and risk mitigation.
  • Mentor Finance Services staff to continuously develop capability to optimize staff engagement, motivation and productivity, and maintain a customer-centric culture of continuous improvement.
  • Implement and monitor appropriate financial management policies, transactional protocols and controls, including clear service catalogues, service level agreements and ability to measure service delivery of the team.
  • Monitor, identify and drive required continuous improvement opportunities to enhance financial capabilities of finance support functions in the efficient delivery of services to deliver key outcomes and objectives for the broader effectiveness of UNSW Finance.
  • Lead the design and development of a unified team and operating model that delivers standardised transactional services, that are accurate, swift, seamless and capable of troubleshooting issues at the first instance. The design will incorporate best practice principles.

Skills and Experience Summary:

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline, CA or CPA qualification (or equivalent), and relevant professional sector experience.
  • Proven experience in a mature shared service environment, with the ability to provide actionable operational advice and guidance in coordinating and delivering financial services in a complex organisation.
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate effectively with diverse stakeholders to achieve successful business outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to use initiative, think strategically and prioritise effectively coupled with a good understanding of end-to-end processes and the ability to identify opportunities for process improvement.
  • Demonstrated problem solving, planning and organisational ability to deliver results and enhance the value provided to local area finance operation in delivering their operational and strategic plans.
  • Strong leadership experience with demonstrated capability to identify and establish priorities and mentor, develop, and motivate the team to deliver value to stakeholders and customers.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
  • Demonstrated success working effectively and collaboratively on initiatives with a range of people at different levels within an organisation.
