The Faculty of Science teaches approximately 7000 full-time student equivalents, with an academic staff of approximately 500 and general staff of 300. The Faculty is one of the largest and most complex faculties of UNSW Sydney. It comprises the School of Aviation, Biological Earth and Environmental Science (BEES), Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BABS), Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Mathematics and Statistics, Psychology, and Physics. It also includes several major Research Centres and field stations.
The Senior Engagement Officer plays a key role within the Faculty of Science in providing high-level practical and efficient project support for the Faculty’s engagement plans with internal and external communities. This includes managing aspects of project development and delivery within the Faculty Executive portfolio, including researching, preparing and coordinating relevant materials and events to ensure Portfolio goals and initiatives are accomplished.
About the role
• LEVEL 7 - $110k - $119k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
• Fixed Term – 12 Months (MAT Leave Cover)
• Full-time (35 hours per week)
The role reports to the Strategy Manager and has no direct reports.
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
- Develop and manage a Faculty engagement plan in alignment with the evolving needs of the Faculty, including driving and managing projects.
- Manage the delivery of engagement projects in the Engagement portfolio, including strategy communication materials, event coordination and reporting, action-item tracking, proof-reading, committee and board preparation and commentary.
- Contribute to the generation of content for Science communication material in conjunction with External Engagement including social and digital media.
- Assist and/or lead in the preparation of meeting briefs, reports or other collateral to support specific engagements with relevant UNSW colleagues and external partner organisations
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with the Science Dean’s Unit teams, Faculty Executive and across key school members such as Heads of Schools, School Managers, Project Officers
- Provide effective support to Schools for engagement activities including liaising with the faculty operations team, school staff and external partner organisations.
- Develop and maintain effective collaborative relationships with external stakeholders including industry partners, philanthropy, alumni and professional organisations.
- Undertake regular evaluations of engagement activities across the Faculty and implement improvements as required.
- Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values
- Cooperate with all health & safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.

To be successful in this role you will have:
- Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
- Strong organisational and administrative skills and demonstrated ability to prioritise workload and meet strict deadlines while working in a high volume, process driven environment with variable workflow patterns.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated interpersonal skills.
- Excellent stakeholder management skills, with proven ability to influence stakeholders as appropriate to ensure successful engagement outcomes.
- Experience in coordinating activity around high profile campaigns or events, ideally in the science and engineering fields in Australia and globally.
- Demonstrated experience in promotional, event management and engagement work.
- Sound consultation and influencing skills and proven ability to interact effectively and develop relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong time management and organisational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
- Demonstrated initiative and sound analytical and problem-solving skills.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
