About the Role

UNSW Planning and Performance (UPP) enhances business intelligence, planning, and performance using reliable data managed through the enterprise data warehouse, Information Hub, and Data Governance. UPP provides management information, analysis, and insights for senior university leadership, supporting decision-making and reporting to the Commonwealth Government and other statutory bodies.

The Senior Business Analyst helps deliver the Azure data platform infrastructure and develops the Azure Data Lake. They collaborate with the Senior Manager, Insights Analytics & Data to support complex projects, system improvements, and business process enhancements, ensuring quality service delivery with UNSW stakeholders. This role reports to the Senior Manager, Insights Analytics & Data, with no direct reports.

Duties and Responsibilities

Level 7

  • Support the delivery of complex system solutions, establishing and controlling project constraints and scope.
  • Engage with faculty, administrative teams, and stakeholders to understand business needs and translate them into clear, structured requirements.
  • Facilitate workshops, interviews and stakeholder discussions to define project scope, objectives and expected outcomes.
  • Perform and participate in system integration and performance testing to ensure system integrity.
  • Work closely with data team to validate data quality, integrity and reporting accuracy and support data modelling efforts by providing insights into institutional reporting and analytics needs.
  • Assist the Senior Manager, Insight Analytics & Data in Spring planning, backlog grooming, and prioritization of tasks, define user stories, acceptance criteria and test cases to ensure development aligns with business goals.
  • Facilitate stand-ups, retrospectives, and sprint reviews, ensuring effective team collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Provide Secretarial services to nominated committees and business reference groups, draft reports and prepare high level confidential presentations.

Level 8 (in addition to Level 7 duties)

  • Maintain project documentation, roadmaps and reporting dashboards for visibility into progress and key milestones and provide regular updates to leadership on project status, risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Act as project leader when necessary and contribute to improvements to the efficiency and effectiveness of project and business process delivery and to the identification of areas of improvement.
  • Analyse university data structures, workflows and business processes to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement.
  • Investigate, analyse and document business processes to create training and development programs based on the needs of stakeholders/colleagues and present this if/when required.
  • Provides subject matter expertise and advice and whilst representing UPP’s interests at University business reference groups, committees and other relevant operational forums, foster strong relationships with university stakeholders, ensuring alignment between business objectives and technical delivery.
  • Conduct impact assessment and change management support to ensure smooth project adoption.

About You

Level 7

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating and delivering on strategic activities in a complex environment, ideally within higher education.
  • Strong technical and computing skills (specifically including MS Outlook, MS Excel, and databases), with excellent attention to detail.
  • High level project management, analysis, research, planning and advisory skills and experience, combined with creative problem-solving skills.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to engage with senior leadership, faculty and technical teams.
  • Demonstrated high level administrative and organisation skills including proven ability to prioritise high volume workflow to meet critical and competing deadlines.
  • Strong experience in business analysis, requirement gathering, and process improvement within the Higher Education sector.
  • Deep understanding of university data structures, academic operations and reporting needs.
  • Experience with data-driven projects, including data modelling, analytics and dashboard reporting (e.g.: PowerBI, Tableau)

Level 8 (in addition to Level 8 duties)

  • Advanced project management skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent complex projects (end to end), to provide high-level advice and review and re-engineer complex systems and processes.
  • Demonstrated high level critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Excellent documentation skills, including creating business/functional requirements documentations, user stories and process flows.
