The School of Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW is a leading research mathematics school in Australia and enjoys a strong international reputation. The Department of Pure Mathematics at UNSW is one of the largest and most successful in Australia. It is an active centre for fundamental research and has a particular strength in the area of number theory.

The Research Associate will undertake collaborative and self-directed research on an ARC-funded Discovery Project.

The core of this project is to investigate the arithmetic and geometric structure of rational functions over fields of number theoretic interest, which is fundamental in essentially every area of mathematics, especially in number theory and arithmetic geometry. It will focus on studying the joint multiplicative structure of several rational functions, modulo sets of arithmetic interest (such as finitely generated subgroups), via a range of algebraic, analytic and geometric techniques. This project lies within the so-called area of “Unlikely Intersections”, which is at the cross-roads of several fundamental areas: number theory (both algebraic and analytic), arithmetic and Diophantine geometry, complex analysis. We will also investigate applications in Arithmetic Dynamics, more precisely study the arithmetic structure of orbits defined by iterations of rational functions.   

About the role

  • $76K - $102K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 2 years.
  • Full time (35 hours)

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Conduct research in number theory and arithmetic geometry (as per above), and applications in arithmetic dynamics.
  • Perform research collaboratively and individually, which will lead to high quality research articles for publication in internationally refereed mathematics journals.
  • Cooperate with the relevant research groups at UNSW.
  • Present results of research at conferences and other venues.
  • Coordinate research activities and participate in the setting of future research directions of the project.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant

  • PhD in Mathematics, or close to completion, in number theory and/or arithmetic geometry.
  • Demonstrated high level analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • A significant track record of research publications (relative to career opportunity).
  • Demonstrated capacity to deliver high quality project outcomes in a timely manner.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
