The Senior Data Engineer is responsible for building, implementing, and supporting data solutions and integration components using data technology components. This role combines expertise in data engineering, data modeling, Master Data Management (MDM), and DevOps practices to ensure efficient data pipelines, reliable deployments, and optimal performance of data systems.

The position reports to the Lead Solution Architect - MDM and Data and has no direct reports.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of Master Data Management (MDM) solutions, canonical data models, data pipelines, and integrations with business applications.
  • Drive continuous improvement and scalability of MDM and data platform components aligned with UNSW’s Microsoft-based integration framework and industry best practice.
  • Provide expert technical leadership and support, guiding developers, vendors, and internal teams to deliver high-quality, integrated solutions.
  • Design and implement database schemas, ingestion and transformation pipelines, and SQL queries within the Microsoft Azure environment.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, and stakeholders to ensure data solutions meet functional, technical, and business requirements.
  • Manage project risks, issues, and dependencies to ensure successful outcomes and platform stability.
  • Support leadership in optimising integration and data services practices, resourcing, and stakeholder engagement across UNSW IT.

Skills and Experience Summary:

  • Tertiary qualifications in IT or a related discipline, with 7+ years’ experience in software development and data engineering using cloud architectures and middleware.
  • Extensive experience with enterprise Master Data Management (MDM) platforms, data modelling, integration, and data design, including SQL queries and database schemas.
  • Hands-on expertise with Informatica Cloud MDM / Customer 360 / Product 360, including match and merge rules, survivorship logic, hierarchies, workflows, and Golden Record creation.
  • Proven proficiency in designing and implementing solutions using Azure data services (MS SQL, Synapse, Data Factory, Databricks, Data Lake, Storage Accounts, Service Bus).
  • Strong experience in data integration using synchronous and asynchronous patterns (API, ESB, ETL) and ETL/ELT tools such as Informatica PowerCenter, IDMC, and Azure Data Factory.
  • Demonstrated experience developing data solutions to support API integrations, with strong understanding of application, data, and API security and privacy controls.
  • Proficiency with Azure DevOps and CI/CD tools for automated testing, deployment, and database schema management.
  • Experience managing data products across the full product lifecycle, with strong product management and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Knowledge of system integration methods, development lifecycles, and tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Docker, Kubernetes, Databricks, Artifactory, Git, Jira, and Confluence.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies, including participation in storyboarding, estimation, and project management activities.
