Why your Role Matters
As the strategic architect behind the Vice-Chancellor’s communications, this role is responsible for crafting compelling speeches and messaging that aligns with UNSW’s vision, strategy, achievements and overarching narrative.

Reporting to the Chief of Staff and supported by a Writer and Communications Officer, this critical position acts as a trusted advisor across VC Office (VCO) communications and creative force writing considered speeches and presentations that support the Vice-Chancellor’s position as a thought leader and champion of UNSW’s commitment to innovative research and transformation education with a global reach.

Working in close partnership with the Vice-Chancellor, Chief of Staff, the VCO team, and stakeholders across the University, this senior role stays informed on both topical higher education matters and internal university priorities to oversee the strategic preparation of internal and external communication materials, including, but not limited to speeches, articles, commentaries and thought leadership pieces; forewords and introductions; reports and briefs; newsletters; video scripts; and social media posts.

Who You Are:
This role calls for a curious mind, deep research capabilities, and an exceptional command of language to translate complex ideas into powerful communications to reach diverse audiences. Comfortable in navigating a workflow that isn’t always linear, we are seeking a communications professional who enjoys the sometimes fast-paced nature of speech writing that occurs in this space.

Skills & Experience summary: You will hold a relevant qualification in the social sciences, as well as having industry experience in speech writing, with extensive experience working with senior executive management, alongside:

  • Demonstrated high level communication, writing and interpersonal skills, with a breadth of experience presenting a wide range of subject matters to diverse audience groups.
  • Demonstrated excellence in relationship building and managing constructive working relationships throughout an organisation, with the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels of the organisation.
  • Highly motivated, confident, pro-active self-starter with proven organisational aptitude, excellent attention to detail, demonstrated sound judgement, and creativity in approach.
  • Ability to function effectively under pressure, manage numerous tasks concurrently, and adhere to multiple and/or conflicting timelines while demonstrating a flexible, adaptable approach.
  • Demonstrated excellent ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, including the capability to work across multi-functional structures.
  • Proven ability to consult, research, analyse issues and process information and articulate complex information to a broad range of audiences.
  • Experience with social media.
