Why Your Role Matters:

The Software Engineer – AI and GIS Leader will head a team of engineers to develop and maintain LLM, NLP, and GIS capabilities for the EPIWATCH® system. The role includes managing agile development cycles, ensuring system functionality, and working closely with the Software and Epidemiology Team Leads to prioritise workflows, meet deadlines, and align with stakeholder needs.

The role of Software Engineering Team Leader reports to Professor and Program Head, the Kirby Institute and has up to four direct reports.

Skills and Experience:

  • Tertiary qualifications in software engineering with at least 3 years of relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
  • Experience with the EPIWATCH® system or developing and managing a similar platform related to epidemiology, and a sound understanding of the architecture and functions of such a system on web and mobile app interfaces.
  • Demonstrated experience in GIS analytics and processing including the use of PostGIS for storing and processing GIS data types. Proficient in applying standard analytical methods and conventions for handling GIS data.
  • Proven experience in backend web development, including the design and implementation of APIs in FastAPI. Skilled in relational database design, administration and the integration of databases with software systems via APIs.
  • Experience with developing data pipelines, using Python and Postgres, experience with DevOps and deploying software in Azure, with Linux systems for application development and AI workflows, NLP and LLMs.
  • Demonstrated innovation and creativity in addressing complex software engineering problems, implementing and evaluating machine learning models. with a proven ability to provide solutions within an agile environment and short-term development sprints.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and a proven ability to manage a team, work well both independently and with others.
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to write reports.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
