Why this role matters
The Baum lab at UNSW is seeking a Research Officer to play a key role within the School of Biomedical Sciences supporting and progressing a new research project to develop a malaria vaccine, specifically targeting cellular (T-cell) immunity.
Using judgement, initiative and the use of considerable theoretical and technical skills, the Research Officer will conduct research that contributes to the testing of cellular responses to immunisation (in an experimental model of malaria) and moving understanding from testing to applied vaccine development as well as contributing more broadly to a range of projects conducted within the Baum laboratory. The Research Officer will provide comprehensive technical, research and project support to senior research staff in activities associated with various research projects.
Key skills required:
- Degree in biomedical, biological or biotechnological science (or a related/relevant discipline) or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training or experience.
- Direct experience of immunological techniques (e.g. ELISA, ELISpot, Flow Cytometry, Tissue culture and lentiviral transduction) and in vivo models of the immune system.
- Advanced knowledge of cellular immunity, experience of infection models and experience with working on T-cell biology/antigen presentation would be highly desirable.
- Advanced knowledge of vaccines (of any platform, mRNA, VLP, protein or attenuated) would be highly desirable.
- Advanced knowledge of research protocols, experimental design and planning as involved in developing research projects and reporting against milestones.
- High-level quantitative data management and research skills and a proven record in the management and use of large datasets/databases.
- Experience working with a range of computer systems and applications, including Microsoft suite, LabArchives and Flow Cytometry analysis.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
- Demonstrated ability to work with, write for, communicate with, and present to a range of audiences regarding quantitative statistics and research findings.
- Sound influencing and consultation skills and proven ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders.
