Why your role matters

The Senior Occupational Hygiene Specialist provides enterprise-level specialist leadership in managing occupational hygiene risks across UNSW.

You will be operating as the University’s principal technical authority, the role ensures that all relevant exposures—chemical, biological, radiological, and physical—are systematically identified, assessed, and controlled across diverse activities and locations.

About You

  • Extensive experience in occupational hygiene risk management and health and safety advisory functions in complex, high-risk environments.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification with significant and sustained relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
  • Proven capability in best practice H&S risk management, including critical risk control approaches, within relevant legislation, Australian standards, industry best practice and an ISO 45001 aligned framework.
  • Proven capability to act as the principal technical authority in occupational hygiene risk management, including authoritative advice across chemical, biological, or radiological exposures.
  • Demonstrated success shaping standards and system design to embed effective occupational hygiene risk management into operational practice in a complex organisation.
  • Proven ability to lead projects and initiatives that drive continuous improvement.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to navigate complex organisational environments and drive successful outcomes.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills to uplift capability across multidisciplinary teams and drive cultural change in risk management practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare high-quality reports and training materials.
