The Manager, Application Platform Services is accountable for providing reliable application environment services for critical enterprise applications in the Student domain (which gather all student platforms), ensuring they run smoothly and efficiently. The role is responsible for managing the cloud-based environments (production and non-production) for student systems operations as well as for large scale, multi-million dollar programs of work requiring environments for development and testing. The role is responsible for optimising performance, cost management and driving integration with cloud-based infrastructure services across AWS and Microsoft Azure. The position reports to the Technology Manager – Student Solutions.The Manager, Application Platform Services has no direct reports but will oversee the work of approximately 5 student systems developers and 8 vendor resources.
Specific accountabilities for this role include:
- Manage, evolve and optimise cloud-based enterprise application environments for the efficient and reliable operations for student administration and the provision of environments to large technology change projects, ensuring a balance of cost and performance
- Manage collaborative vendor relationships, negotiating contracts, and ensuring vendor compliance with service level agreements (SLAs).
- Ensure appropriate security controls are in place to meet the University’s Cyber security policies, goals and objectives.
- Assess, manage and mitigate operational risks, and if necessary advise and instigate any risk management actions to ensure the application services operate within an acceptable level of risk.
- Optimise the operational management of application infrastructure, enforcing best practices in availability, security, monitoring and resilience.
- Lead the development, implementation and refinement of automation tools to streamline application deployment.
- Lead proactive risk management efforts, including business continuity, disaster recovery planning, and cyber-resilience initiatives.
- Provide expert advice and information to stakeholders on emerging Cloud technical capabilities, implement recommendations to support strategic infrastructure alignment.
- upervise the execution and documentation of corrective, preventative and adaptive maintenance plans for applications in the student domain.
- Oversee compliance with regulatory standards, organisational policies, and security protocols across all application platforms.

Skills and Experience:
- Tertiary qualifications in information Technology (IT), another related discipline and/or equivalent level of knowledge and experience.
- Extensive experience (10 years +) leading increasingly complex IT Operations teams.
- Advanced experience in managing cloud services (such as AWS and Microsoft Azure) and leveraging Infrastructure-as-Code tools like Terraform or CloudFormation. High Proficiency in managing cloud-based infrastructure solutions which host Java and PHP applications
- Advanced interpersonal, negotiating and influencing skills with the ability to exercise initiative, build credibility and provide expert advice to influence outcomes.
- Proven expertise in administering enterprise resource planning systems such as Oracle Cloud and/or PeopleSoft and/or Microsoft.
- Demonstrated people management responsibilities, and proven communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong presentation skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to structure and articulate messages to different audiences.
- Advanced experience with Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL server DBMS and database tuning initiatives.
- Hands-on experience with patch management, module configuration, security setup, performance tuning, and integration frameworks.
- Demonstrated knowledge of security protocols, compliance requirements, and best practices to ensure that systems remain secure against emerging threats.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
