The Opportunity

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering has an opportunity for a Senior Research Associate. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to the VRStreetLab project, which aims to address challenges in cycling by developing smart cycling infrastructure. These innovations will be assessed using a cutting-edge VR Transport simulator platform. The project seeks to test cycling infrastructure in a controlled-risk environment, enabling cost-effective, data-driven evaluations before implementation.

Your responsibilities will include data analysis, project coordination, survey design, stakeholder engagement, communication, and ensuring alignment with the National Road Safety Strategy 2021–30 and the National Road Safety Action Plan 2023–25.

This position will give you the opportunity to develop your scholarly research and professional activities. You will contribution through the writing of scientific papers and reports for international journals, active participation in conferences and workshops, mentoring and supervising HDR students, and fostering strong engagement with industry partners.

This role reports to Dr Taha Hossain Rashidi, and has no direct reports

  • Level B, Salary - $123,620 to $145,730 per annum + 17% superannuation
  • Part time – 0.5 FTE (2.5 days per week)
  • Fixed-term contract – 6 months
  • Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia

Skills and Experience

  • A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
  • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership.
  • A track record of significant involvement with the profession and/or industry.
  • High level communication skills and ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • Experience with machine learning methods and data visualization tools.
  • Strong background in choice modelling, data analysis, optimisation method and statistical modelling.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and coordination.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
