Why Your Role Matters

The Mental Health Clinician (internally referred as Triage Centre Clinician) plays a key role within Pro Vice-Chancellor Education & Student Experience portfolio, Student Wellbeing pillar, Health theme in the provision of expert mental health assessment, risk management and recommendations for ongoing care of enrolled UNSW students. The role makes a critical contribution to the Mental Health Connect Team, responsible for responding to student mental health needs flexibly and creatively to reduce barriers to care, whilst working within its professional scope of practice.

The role is fixed term until the end of April 2025, replacing a current employee on parental leave, and reports to the Team Lead, Mental Health Connect.

Main responsibilities Summary

  • Provide timely triage, intake, treatment, and referrals for students in crisis or with significant mental health issues, including short-term case management
  • Assess severity and urgency, and create care plans within a trauma-informed model
  • Facilitate referrals to internal and external services for seamless care transition
  • Support the UNSW community during mental health crises, critical incidents, or student deaths
  • Follow up on referrals from the After-Hours Telephone Student Support Line
  • Liaise with UNSW Security, Police, and other services for safety and risk management
  • Coordinate treatment under the Mental Health Act NSW 2007 when necessary
  • Collaborate on safety management plans for high-risk students with the multidisciplinary team
  • Document clinical care and ensure compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements
  • Communicate clinical statuses and escalate as needed within the team
  • Liaise and negotiate with stakeholders and represent the area in relevant meetings and committees

Who You Are

We are looking for someone who is aligned with UNSW’s vision and values, who have empathy for, and understanding of, the psychosocial issues and potential crises experienced by students undertaking university level studies. We’d love you to come equipped with:

  • Full and current AHPRA registration as a Psychologist/Clinical Psychologist, or Registered Nurse (ACMHN Credentialed), or Occupational Therapist (BAMH Endorsement), or Mental Health Social Worker (AASW Accredited).
  • Substantial post registration experience working within a relevant mental health clinical setting, conducting mental health and risk assessment (4 years minimum)
  • A strong understanding of triage processes and risk assessment in a tertiary education setting would be advantageous, but not essential
  • Demonstrated competence in assessment and clinical interventions that are trauma-informed and culturally appropriate with individuals of different ages and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide consultation, advice, and support to key stakeholders, including family members, primary carers, academic teaching staff, and other internal/external support services, whilst confidently balancing safety and confidentiality
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and time management skills
  • Strong consultation, influencing, and negotiation skills with demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills across a number of modalities, with the ability to prepare complex reports/documents that present a cogent and coherent argument based on analysis and synthesis of information from a range of sources.
  • Experience working with a range of computer systems and applications, including Microsoft Office applications, and the ability to learn and utilize digital platforms associated with delivering tele-consultations and confidential documentation of consultation and treatment e.g., current electronic record system (Point and Click)

Working hours are Monday to Friday, business hours. Whilst we ideally would like the successful candidate to work full-time hours, we are open to candidates who can only work 3 or 4 days per week (but not less than that). The team works in a flexible hybrid environment. You will be required to be on campus face-to-face on some days of the week, at UNSW Kensington Campus.
