Why This Role Matters: 
 
The Senior Technical Officer provides expert knowledge and technical skills that facilitate making in support of the Faculty’s academic programs, and provides technical support to staff and students, while applying and monitoring the appropriate Work Health and Safety procedures and guidelines. 

In liaison with the Making Centre Workshop Manager, this position will lead the Screen Printing and Print Making team based in the Making Centre at the School of Art & Design Paddington. The Senior Technical Officer is a face-to-face position that leads the teams in the Screen Printing and Print Making studios.  This position reports directly to the Making Centre Workshop Manager and supervises full time, part-time, casual staff and student volunteers. Senior Technical Officers are expected to work as part of a collaborative team with the other Senior Technical Officers within the Making Centre.

In addition to relevant skills required to adequately support Screen Printing and Print Making course work and research, specific accountabilities for this role include: 

  • Manage and supervise the day-to-day operations of the Screen Printing and Print Making Studios and associated facilities, working closely with the Making Centre Workshop Manager. 

  • Provide day to day direction to staff working within the Screen Printing and Print Making Studios. Be a point of escalation as needed for more complex matters that arise. 

  • Liaise with academic staff to help achieve the desired project-based learning and course-work outcomes. Maintain a strong understanding of their desired learning outcomes for students and partner with academic staff to ensure these outcomes are met. 

  • Co-ordinate the training of permanent and casual staff with the Making Centre Manager. 

  • Co-ordinate the engagement of PEP students and volunteers to work in the area. 

  • Provide on-going support to students assisting them with projects, end of year exhibitions and assessments.  

  • Manage and authorise access to spaces and equipment managed as part of the Screen Printing and Print Making Studios. 

  • Coordinate a loan service of equipment and consumables as appropriate to the effective and safe delivery of the Faculty’s programs. 

  • Continuously monitor and review existing safety processes and documentation to ensure the Screen Printing and Print Making Studios are maintained in a safe working condition and the appropriate records are kept. 

  • Develop online content to promote the effective use of equipment, software and hardware through the UNSW Making website. 

  • Organise 6 monthly safety Inspections of relevant Labs and upkeep of maintenance register. 
     

Skills and Experience:  
 
To be considered you will hold Australian Working Rights or Australian Citizenship. Visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment.

  • A relevant tertiary degree with a depth of subsequent relevant experience or extensive relevant work experience in a technical/ fabrication role.  

  • Extensive experience operating and undertaking various processes used to deliver Screen Printing and Print Making course work and research. 

  • Demonstrated experience in continuous evaluation and improvement in support student learning environments. 

  • Superior ability to build relationships and connect with a wide variety of stakeholders. 

  • Superior ability to work independently and lead a diverse team. 

  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service and implementing a client centric environment. 

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise workload, work consistently within busy schedules and meet deadlines under pressure. 

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a constantly changing, fast paced, collaborative environment.
