About UNSW IT and the role:

UNSW IT is part of the Operations Division at UNSW. The IT team at UNSW plays a critical role in enabling the University’s teaching, research, and industry engagement.  Would you be keen to make a difference and work in higher education ?

The Studio Manager - Multimedia, Audio Visual and Immersive Technologies is responsible for supporting students, researchers and staff from across UNSW. In particular, this role has both a broad AV and IT knowledge, as well as a specialist expertise ranging from both cutting edge and established Audio visual technology, implementation, practices and technologies. With a strong emphasis on engagement, this position will be organising, hosting, coordinating and promoting active dialogue and participation within the studio. This role supports the broader Audio Visual and Immersive technologies teams and engages various speciality academic research practices across the university. This role reports to the Senior Manager of Multimedia and Immersive Technology and has no direct reports.

Specific accountabilities for this role include:

  • Engage Diverse University Groups and actively engage with groups of lecturers, students, and researchers to gather feedback, test educational theories, and refine AV and immersive technology applications in response.
  • Facilitate Feedback Loops, by organizing regular meetings and forums to collect and analyze feedback from university stakeholders, using insights to drive continuous improvements in technology deployment and user experience.
  • Coordinate Showcases, arrange and manage with internal and external companies, clubs groups and organizations, demonstrating the capabilities and educational impact of new AV and immersive technologies.
  • Promote the Research and Development of the studio process. Work closely with academic and internal IT departments to market and publicize innovative work in multimedia and immersive technologies.
  • Enhance External Collaboration by developing and maintaining relationships with industry partners and external entities to enhance technology offerings and ensure that the university remains at the cutting edge of educational technology.
  • Provide Multi-media and Immersive technology guidance and support to UNSW lecturers in the studio through training and workshops.
  • Support and coordinate the continuous deployment of audio-visual system installations, including integration of technology, immersive, VR, holograph and audio spaces and technologies, within the studio space. This will include coordination with other university departments, building and technical contractors.
  • Provide on-site guidance and coaching to audio visual team and team leaders in the delivery of administrative, technical and professional services. This includes providing advice on procedures, systems, priorities and coordinating budgets for installation, maintenance and design programs to senior managers.
  • Support multi-media and Immersive technologies in studio these Technologies include, but are not limited to Video, Audio, Musical, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Generative AI, Metaverse concepts, Robotics etc Technologies.
  • Support software associated with multimedia and immersive technologies in studio and for individual computers. Manage specialist software and coordinate with UNSW IT teams to ensure software runs successfully.
  • Monitor usage and feedback of the studio to provide advice and recommendations to the MAVI Team Leaders and Manager about the effectiveness of current technical systems and implement improvements through standards, processes and guidelines.
  • Develop and manage effective communication with stakeholders, ensuring high quality, efficient customer service is provided. This may include providing customers with face to face instruction in the use of equipment and systems.
  • A single point of contact for all customers through a variety of channels including but not limited to telephone and email.

  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.

Skills and Experience:

  • Tertiary qualifications in relevant discipline with subsequent relevant experience in the operation, maintenance and installation of audio visual and immersive multimedia systems or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency in specialised Multimedia systems and Immersive Technologies, some of which may include- Audio and Video Production, musical technologies, VR, AR, etc.
  • Experience and current ability to record and edit sound and video.
  • Proven ability to build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, brief contractors, meet critical deadlines and proven experience in a customer service environment.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage and resolve conflicting priorities, work effectively on multiple tasks, meet deadlines, manage time and ensure targeted outcomes.
  • Superior problem-solving skills with complex Audio Visual and Multimedia systems including control systems and proven ability to exercise judgement, use initiative and leverage data to uncover trends and implement solutions.
  • Relevant experience in a large and complex organisation with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to review existing processes, provide recommendations to stakeholders and implement innovative solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience in technical planning, and technical management of multimedia solutions in an education & Research context and related systems.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training. Pre-employment checks required for this position.
