The School of Psychology at UNSW is the leading Psychology school in Australia. The Research Assistant will provide day-to-day research assistance and support within the laboratory based at the School of Psychology at the University of NSW Sydney. This role performs and assists with a variety of behavioural experiments related to feeding behaviours and provides general laboratory maintenance.
 
About the role
• $85k - $96k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
• Fixed Term – 12 months
• Full time (35 hours)
 
The role of Research Assistant reports to Dr Zhi Yi Ong and has no direct reports.
 
Specific responsibilities for this role include: 
  • Provision of practical and efficient research support to stakeholders. 
  • Perform and assist in a variety of behavioural experiments related to feeding behaviours, including animal handling, monitoring, stereotaxic surgery, injections and run behavioural tasks. 
  • Perform data collection, entry and analysis. 
  • Undertake unsupervised research support tasks consistent with established methodologies. 
  • Liaise with stakeholders and proactively assist with research reports, peer-reviewed publications, presentations, ethics applications and progress reports. 
  • Monitor research protocols, provide problem solving and resolution to any evolving problems related to design, implementation and analysis, escalating more complex issues as required. 
  • Perform histological experiments including brain tissue sectioning, immunohistochemistry and microscopy. 
  • Assist students and staff with technical queries related to their research. 
  • Perform general lab maintenance including cleaning, ordering lab supplies and record keeping. 
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values. 
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others. 
About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)
 
To be successful in this role you will have:
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Psychology, Neuroscience or a related field, or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience. 
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting a research project in the field of Psychology or Neuroscience and knowledge of research protocols, experimental design, ethics applications, data collection and record keeping. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands. 
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative. 
  • Sound data management skills. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders. 
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines. 
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
