Those who are appointed to this prestigious specialism will be expected to successfully drive educational excellence within the university’s teaching and learning communities.

The school is currently seeking an experienced scholar and teacher of Social Work to join its team. This is a Convertible Tenure Track Employment Contract Level B position. The successful applicant will contribute to the School’s Social Work (Hons.) and Social Sciences teaching programs, including undergraduate and postgraduate coursework.

The role of EF Lecturer reports to the Head of School and has nil direct reports.

Responsibilities Summary:

  • Demonstrate and continuously develop a well-defined teaching philosophy that inspires student learning;
  • Conduct classes, assess student learning achievements and support students in postgraduate and undergraduate courses in line with UNSW policy;
  • Design and develop learning activities and resources, and assessment and feedback using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments;
  • Initiate the development of experimental approaches to teaching and learning with the support of more senior academics;
  • Initiate and lead practice-based research projects that advance knowledge about contemporary and social issues and enhance the learning experience for students;
  • Support learning progression with students as individuals (through such activities as one-to-one consultation) and as a cohort (through general course related advice) to achieve positive learning and employability outcomes for students;
  • Manage course administration as Course Authority, including academic quality assurance;
  • Maintain professional development in pedagogy, disciplinary knowledge and minimum professional accreditation requirements (where relevant);
  • Make a positive contribution to School meetings and seminars and be a member of School/Faculty committees as required.

Skills and Experience Summary:

  • Eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Work;
  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant area of study from a recognised institution and professional expertise or significant experience in social work practice, policy or a related field;
  • At least five years professional practice experience as either a social worker, or in social and public policy or related fields and a capacity to apply that experience to university teaching context.
  • The capacity to publish research in a practice related area;
  • Ability to undertake supervision of honours and/or postgraduate research students, and a willingness to undertake postgraduate supervision;
  • Demonstrated ability to teach into select social work courses at the undergraduate level including Field Education and internship courses;
  • Capacity to contribute to service roles in the School and Faculty, including, full or shared responsibility for overall program convening, as well as to contribute to the interdisciplinary character of the School;
  • Capacity to foster external relationships with partners to advance societal impact and engagement.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
