Associate Lecturer/Lecturer Biomedical Sciences, Rural - Port Macquarie

  • Employment Type: Part–time, 21 - 28 hours a week (0.6 – 0.8 FTE neg)
  • Duration: Fixed Term contract until 30th June 2027
  • Remuneration: Academic Level A or Level B $91,381 - $127,947 per annum, (dependent upon experience) pro-rata, plus 17% superannuation and leave loading  
  • Work rights required: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Candidates must hold full rights to work in Australia to be considered for this position.

UNSW Rural (Port Macquarie campus)

UNSW Rural brings world-class medical education to rural and regional Australia, delivering the full 6-year medical course at our rural clinical campuses (RCC) across several locations. Face-to-face teaching is critical to rural program delivery as students build strong relationships with and benefit from more personal interaction with clinicians and other academics and become a part of the local medical community. UNSW’s program has strongly supported the aims of the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training (RHMT) program for over 25-years, delivering excellence in rural medical education and student experience.

Details of the role

UNSW’s Education Focussed roles (EF) enable academics to specialise in education and devote their time to delivering high-quality teaching and pursuing initiatives to enhance the educational experience of our students. Those who are appointed to this prestigious specialism will be expected to successfully drive educational excellence within the university’s teaching and learning communities. 

The role of Associate Lecturer/Lecturer, Biomedical Sciences, Rural will have a passion for teaching and demonstrating within the laboratory environment and make an important contribution to the undergraduate medical course in the delivery of biomedical sciences and laboratory management at the RCC. A key focus of the role is ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the laboratory environment through the provision of quality technical support. Tasks including but not limited to the set-up and pack-down, resolution of general and complex technical issues, maintaining and managing laboratory equipment, laboratory compliance and documentation, safety records and inventories. A demonstrated interest in rural health education supporting local hospital and community health outcomes is a requirement of the position.

The position reports to the Director of Medical Education at the identified campus and has no direct reports.

Some key skills required:

  • An BMed, MBBS and/or undergraduate degree in a relevant medical sciences field, or a PhD in a relevant medical sciences field with subsequent relevant work experience and professional expertise.
  • Actively stay up to date with discipline knowledge, technical expertise and professional development of teaching practice.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching effectiveness in biomedical sciences and a strong commitment to rurally focussed teaching.
  • Teach basic biomedical components of the course including but not limited to anatomy, physiology, genetics and immunology, biochemistry, introductory histology, pharmacology, cell and molecular biology, microbiology, research methodology and statistics, as required.
  • Demonstrated experience and technical knowledge in laboratory management, regulatory compliance and safety management.
  • Set-up equipment, prepare chemical solutions and develop samples and cultures as required, and support and mentor students ensuring appropriate laboratory processes and safety procedures are maintained.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and hardware, coordinate servicing, repairs and replacement, and use identified UNSW systems for resourcing and ordering, as appropriate.

At Lecturer (Level B, in addition to the above)

  • Demonstrated experience in large and small group teaching and a commitment to teaching excellence and supervision with a focus on biomedical sciences.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of information technologies for the support of basic and clinical medical sciences, including eLearning.
  • Strong communication skills and an ability to network effectively and engage with students and staff, including in a collaborative team environment and across disciplines.
  • Emerging research interest with peer-reviewed publications.
