Position Summary:

The Senior Network Engineer provides expert services in relation to the design, implementation, operation, and optimisation of managed network systems for all of UNSW. The role combines responsibilities for designing and implementing network solutions with day-to-day operations, providing secure, resilient, and highly performant network services to UNSW staff, students, partners and alumni.

The position is part of UNSW IT but works closely with the Faculties and Divisions to ensure that network services operate within their define metrics and to maximise uptime for the UNSW environment.This position is part of UNSW IT and reports to the Network Team Leader and has no direct reports.

Accountabilities:

  • Design & Documentation: Develop and review network infrastructure designs, specifications, and as-built documentation. Ensure compliance with UNSW design standards and architectural principles.
  • Implementation & Assurance: Deliver and support the implementation of network solutions, including staging, testing, and commissioning. Provide oversight of contractor activities where required to ensure quality and compliance with design standards.
  • Operations & Support: Operate and maintain network infrastructure across Core, Campus, Data Centre, and Cloud environments. Act as an escalation point for complex incidents and problems, ensuring timely resolution and root-cause analysis.
  • Incident, Problem & Change Management: Respond to network-related incidents and requests. Plan, test, and execute network changes, upgrades, and patches in alignment with change control processes and operational standards.
  • Capacity & Performance Management: Monitor and optimise network performance, ensuring reliability, resilience, and scalability. Forecast capacity requirements to support future growth and service demand.
  • Asset & Lifecycle Management: Maintain accurate inventory and records of network assets, including procurement, deployment, warranties, contracts, and decommissioning. Support lifecycle refresh planning and management of technical debt.
  • Risk, Security & Compliance: Implement security, risk, and compliance controls in daily operations and designs. Partner with Cyber Security, Risk, and Audit functions to remediate vulnerabilities and meet compliance obligations.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with internal IT teams, facilities management, service providers, and vendors to deliver effective network outcomes. Provide clear, expert advice to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing: Work closely with project managers, architects, and peers to deliver projects and initiatives. Mentor junior colleagues, share knowledge, and maintain high-quality documentation and runbooks.
  • Continuous Improvement & Innovation: Drive improvements in automation, observability, and AI-driven operations to increase efficiency, reliability, and proactive issue resolution. Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the team and service portfolio.
  • Team Contribution: Support the Team Leader in optimising practices, workflows, and resourcing to promote strong team collaboration and delivery.
  • On-Call & After-Hours Support: Participate in rostered on-call and after-hours support, including weekend work, to ensure continuity of critical services.

  • Health & Safety: Ensure hazards and risks psychosocial and physical are identified and controlled for tasks, projects, and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility

Key Selection Criteria:

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education and training.
  • Industry certifications such as Cisco, HPE Aruba, Juniper, Palo Alto Networks at professional-level or higher are desirable.

Experience:

  • Extensive hands-on experience in network operations, engineering and support within large and complex enterprise environments.
  • Proven experience in network solution design and implementation, including high- and low-level designs for routing, switching, wireless, WAN, security, data centre, and cloud connectivity.
  • Demonstrated capability in capacity planning, performance optimisation and lifecycle management, including asset tracking, refresh, and vendor contract management.
  • Experience embedding security, compliance, and risk controls into network operations and collaborating with cyber security and audit teams.
  • Practical experience with network automation, scripting, and monitoring platforms (e.g., Ansible, Python, AI-driven observability tools).
  • Proven track record supporting multi-vendor environments (Cisco, HPE Aruba, Juniper, Palo Alto Networks etc.).
  • Familiarity with capital works or construction projects, including contractor engagement, staging, testing, and commissioning of network services.

Skills:

  • Expert knowledge of network technologies, design, engineering, and operations, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Proficiency with network monitoring, management, and diagnostic tools.
  • Strong understanding of ITIL practices and change control methods for maintaining production and non-production environments.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills, with a proactive and flexible approach to developing robust solutions.
  • Strong communication, consultation, and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and guide junior colleagues, contribute to documentation, and support capability uplift within the team.
  • Effective time management, prioritisation, and organisational skills to manage competing demands in a high-pressure environment.
  • Commitment to continuous learning, staying updated with industry trends, automation practices, and emerging networking technologies.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
