Apply now Job no: 535419
Work type: Part Time
Location: Sydney, NSW
Categories: Student Services

  • Employment Type: Part Time (8-hour week)
  • Duration: Fixed Term (12-month contract from Jan 2026 to Dec 2026)
  • Remuneration: $76959 – pro rata + 17% superannuation
  • Location:  Kensington NSW (UNSW Colleges)

About the role

The Resident Mentor plays an important role within the Division of Education and Student Experience under the Pro Vice-Chancellor Student Success, by being a leading example to student residents in their professional and personal lives, and by working closely with the Dean and Deputy Dean to facilitate the academic, social, and cultural life of the College.

Resident Mentors (RMs) live with the students on their floors and provide daily academic and pastoral support. RMs aren’t teachers, but they’re a little like a supportive older sibling — with experience to pass on and a willingness to help guide the residents.

Some of the duties involve: taking an active role in floor and College events, participating in meetings and training, assisting in the overnight/after-hours on-call Duty Roster, mentoring students in meeting their academic requirements, as well as promoting respectful relationships between residents. You can view the full list of responsibilities in the job description.

The successful candidate will be the first point of contact for all residents living on their floor in one of our colleges.
This is what our colleges look like: https://www.unsw.edu.au/accommodation/colleges

Hours will vary from week to week depending on student needs — as well as your study or other professional commitments. We are currently recruiting across colleges and have several vacancies available. Successful candidates will be expected to start on 19 January 2026, with contracts ending mid-December 2026. They will need to live on-site in their respective colleges during the period of employment (arrangements to be discussed in the interview).

About You:
You are a great communicator and will display sensitivity, confidentiality, and responsiveness to the needs of resident students and staff. We are looking for someone who:

  • Is engaged in study at UNSW throughout the duration of the contract (essential), with a high level of academic achievement, ideally with experience in tutoring, teaching or training
  • Is willing to move onsite into our college (essential)
  • Has demonstrated ability to contribute to the collegiate community life of a college or other establishment
  • Has experience in and/or a good understanding of the diverse needs and interests of students from a broad range of backgrounds and cultures, both domestic and international
  • Has a First Aid Certification or is willing to obtain one upon starting (essential)
  • Has a valid Working with Children Check and Police Check, or is willing to obtain them at their own cost if successful (essential)
  • Is willing to undertake Warden, Mental Health Awareness, and other relevant UNSW training courses (essential)

To be considered, you will also need to:

  • Be available Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons/evenings (from 5PM) for team meetings (essential)
  • Be willing to be on-call once a fortnight (essential)
  • Be available to start on 19 January and commit to 4 weeks of full-time hours (or maximum allowable hours if on a visa) for training and O-Week (essential)

How to apply and recruitment process: Please submit your resume and a cover letter outlining why you're interested in the role and what you would bring to it. As part of the application form, you’ll also be asked to answer a few additional (mostly logistical) questions.

Shortlisting will begin after the job ad closes, so don’t worry if you don’t hear from us immediately. We expect interviews to take place around [DATE TBC]. Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted for an interview, but all candidates will receive an outcome once the process is complete.

Applications close:  31st October 11.55PM
