Why your role matters

The Director, Data Analytics defines and delivers UNSW’s enterprise-wide analytics strategy, driving advanced analytics, BI, and AI-enabled insights to support evidence-based decision making. Reporting to the Chief Data Officer, the role provides thought leadership, sets governance frameworks, and fosters a culture of data-driven decision making through strong cross-University collaboration and team leadership.

About the Role               

The successful applicant will be required to undertake and have experience in the following areas of expertise:       

  • Lead the development and delivery of an enterprise analytics strategy and roadmap aligned to UNSW’s Data strategy and priorities.
  • Establish and oversee the operating model for analytics within the EDO function, ensuring clarity of roles, minimisation of duplication, and effective coordination across the University.
  • Build and mature an enterprise-wide analytics service spanning business intelligence, reporting, advanced analytics, and AI/ML, underpinned by modern platforms, data models, and self-service capabilities.
  • Ensure analytics outputs are accessible, high-quality, and aligned with enterprise governance, data quality, security, regulatory, and ethical standards.
  • Lead and grow a high-performing multidisciplinary analytics team, fostering a culture of performance, innovation, continuous improvement, and data literacy. Champion communities of practice to strengthen collaboration and capability.
  • Oversee delivery of analytics programmes end-to-end, from business case through execution to benefit realisation ensuring effective prioritisation, financial management, and risk mitigation.
  • Demonstrate and communicate the value of analytics through clear performance metrics and transparent reporting to the CDO and executive committees.

About You

  • Relevant tertiary qualification with substantial relevant experience, or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
  • Proven experience leading analytics strategy and delivery in a large, complex organisation, with the ability to align analytics services to strategic priorities.
  • Strong background in advanced analytics, reporting, data visualisation, and AI/ML, with demonstrated ability to translate emerging technologies into practical, value-driven solutions.
  • Solid understanding of data governance, quality, privacy, security, and architecture, ensuring analytics outputs are trusted, compliant, and sustainable.
  • Experience delivering enterprise-wide analytics programmes, from business case and planning through to execution, benefit realisation, and value measurement.
  • Exceptional ability to engage and influence senior executives, academics, and professional staff, simplifying complex concepts and building buy-in.
  • Demonstrated experience building and leading high-performing, multidisciplinary analytics teams, and fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Experience representing analytics in senior governance forums, shaping decisions, and managing risks and dependencies across portfolios.
