The Opportunity
The Trustworthy Systems Group which is based within the School of Computer Science and Engineering has an opportunity for a Senior Operating Systems Engineer. The Trustworthy Systems Group is a research group that performs world-leading work on software systems whose trustworthiness can be mathematically proved. In this role you will take a leading role in the design, implementation, analysis, and optimisation of Lions OS and its supporting frameworks, as well as the ongoing development of the seL4 microkernel. Additionally, you’ll create valuable resources for both internal teams and the open-source community; initiate and plan projects in collaboration with leadership, helping secure external funding; and manage small to medium infrastructure and research projects while supporting larger programs. This is a highly collaborative position, working closely with engineers, researchers, external partners, and contributors from the wider open-source ecosystem.
This role reports to the Lead OS Engineer and has up to five direct reports.
- Salary, Level 7.1: $113,926 per annum + 17% superannuation

Skills and Experience
- A bachelor's degree (or near completion of) or equivalent in computer science or a related discipline.
- Extensive experience with OS design and implementation issues and the ability to understand current research in computer science.
- Significant and extensive demonstrated experience in low-level systems programming in unmanaged languages (C and assembler), as well as in scripting languages (Python, Unix shell etc).
- Extensive experience with seL4, developing kernel and user-level code.
- Significant experience with current engineering practices including version control, continuous integration, issue tracking and code review.
- Familiarity with software verification. Practical experience with formal verification of systems code is a plus.
- Effective interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work in close collaboration within a team of operating system developers and to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders. Experience managing systems engineering projects and teams.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, working with enthusiasm in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
