Why your role matters

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Researcher to lead and advance impactful research initiatives under the guidance of the Pro Vice-Chancellor Society (PVCS) at UNSW. This crucial role is deeply rooted in research excellence, combining high-level scholarly inquiry with the coordination and management of research operations to support the PVCS’s mission of addressing complex societal challenges and driving global change.

The Senior Researcher will play a central role in shaping and executing the PVCS’s research agenda, focusing on key priority areas such as justice, reconciliation, equality, environmental sustainability, the societal impacts of technology, and the principles outlined in the Uluru Statement from the Heart. This position requires expertise in coordinating interdisciplinary research projects, aligning activities with strategic objectives, and fostering collaborative partnerships with academic teams, external stakeholders, and policy-makers to transform research findings into actionable solutions.

As a core member of the PVCS’s research team, the Senior Researcher will design and implement robust research frameworks, ensure methodological rigor, and facilitate the dissemination of knowledge to drive evidence-based reforms. Reporting directly to the Pro Vice-Chancellor Society, this role offers a unique platform to contribute to transformative research initiatives that address pressing global issues and inspire meaningful societal progress.

Please note that this position is internally referred to as a Research Manager.

Specific accountabilities for this role include:  

  • Conduct research on academic databases, performing literature reviews and gathering information. There is no expectation that any work will be co-published with the PVCS.
  • Develop and implement guidelines, processes and procedures that align and support the research activities of the Pro Vice-Chancellor Society.
  • Perform data collection, management and analysis with particular attention to the remit of the Pro Vice-Chancellor Society including the Uluru Statement from the Heart and across justice, reconciliation, equality, environment and the impacts of technology. The research manager will also provide research and related tasks on the Uluru Statement from the Heart and will contribute to First Nations research on First Nations issues.
  • Consult, liaise and develop strong relationships with stakeholders to achieve research outcomes.

About You:             

  • Demonstrates experience in conducting research and publishing findings, showcasing a strong ability to independently manage research projects and contribute to academic or professional knowledge through published work
  • Demonstrates experience assisting Chief Investigators and research projects
  • An understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander values, perspectives, connections and knowledges that will contribute to an academic environment from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander standpoints
  • Proven record of work with and for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities demonstrating good relations
  • Degree with a substantial extension of the theories and principles normally requiring extensive relevant graduate experience and a range of management experience.
  • Experience working with a range of computer systems and applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced. Proven ability to influence senior management and stakeholders as appropriate to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Sound influencing and consultation skills and proven ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
