The UNSW Democracy Lab (Resilient Democracy Lab) fosters interdisciplinary research on the robustness and resilience of democratic institutions in Australia and globally. Bringing together scholars from business, law, economics, and political science, the Lab promotes both theoretical and empirical research to understand how economic, political, and cultural factors influence democratic stability. Its mission is to generate evidence-based insights and policy solutions that strengthen democracy and design institutions capable of withstanding the challenges posed by extremism, illiberalism, and majoritarianism.
Position Summary
The Senior Administrative Officer, Democracy Lab will play a key role in supporting the strategic growth, coordination, and operational delivery of the UNSW Democracy Lab — an interdisciplinary initiative advancing research on democratic resilience in Australia and globally.
Working closely with Co-Directors Professor Gabrielle Gratton (UNSW Business School) and Professor Rosalind Dixon (Faculty of Law & Justice), the Senior Administrative Officer will manage the Lab’s day-to-day operations, events, communications, and stakeholder engagement. The role contributes to the development and implementation of the Lab’s strategic and operational plans, supports financial and governance processes, and ensures the effective delivery of key academic programs and events.
This position requires strong organizational, communication, and relationship management skills, with a focus on operational excellence and collaborative engagement to support the Lab’s continued growth and impact.
Skills Required:
- Relevant tertiary qualifications with subsequent relevant experience, or equivalent competence gained through a combination of education, training, and professional experience.
- Proven ability to plan, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks and projects within competing deadlines, demonstrating strong organizational and time management skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to the principles of democracy and democratic values, with the ability to translate these into program and stakeholder engagement activities.
- Strong ability to work collaboratively and effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment and to build and maintain productive relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Demonstrated capability to supervise, guide, and influence staff, fostering a collaborative, high performing, and inclusive workplace culture.
- Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare high quality correspondence, reports, and briefing materials for a range of audiences.
- Advanced digital literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office and related applications, with the ability to adopt new systems and technologies to enhance work efficiency.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, and deliver projects and activities within established frameworks, exercising sound judgement and initiative.
- Strong analytical and numeracy skills, with the ability to interpret, communicate, and monitor financial information to support effective budget management.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
