  • Employment Type: Full - time (35 hours a week)
  • Duration: 1-year Fixed Term contract
  • Remuneration: $88,717 base, plus 17% superannuation and leave loading  
  • Work rights required: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Candidates must hold full rights to work in Australia to be considered for this position.

Details of the role

The Research Assistant provides technical and research assistance to the research project “Healing our Spirit: an indigenous-led model of mental healthcare” and will be responsible for conducting qualitative data analysis, contributing to academic writing, and facilitating stakeholder engagement.  The Research Assistant will contribute to drafting peer-reviewed journal articles, preparing research briefs, analysing qualitative data, and assisting in preparing research dissemination outputs. There will be some travel opportunities with this role.

The role of Research Assistant reports to the Deputy Dean, Indigenous and has no direct reports.

Some key skills required:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
  • Demonstrated cultural awareness and responsiveness, with a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in line with UNSW’s values and principles.
  • Draft and edit sections of academic publications, literature reviews and research reports in collaboration with the research team.
  • Prior experience supporting a research project and/or working on research projects involving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, or with a focus on Indigenous issues in Australia, particularly from a critical, decolonial, or intersectional perspective.
  • Conduct qualitative data analysis of transcripts and reflexive journals.
  • Assist with remote fieldwork arrangements (e.g. setting up digital platforms, booking interpreters, managing participant incentives).
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with stakeholders, including research participants and partner organisations, via email, phone, and videoconferencing platforms.
  • Support the development of accessible research summaries and stakeholder presentations.
  • Demonstrated experience with the following:
    • contributing to the writing and editing of academic publications or research outputs.
    • proven ability to undertake qualitative research, including data analysis.
    • experience engaging with stakeholders, using appropriate digital platforms and culturally respectful approaches.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the cultural, historical and systemic contexts shaping Indigenous health, wellbeing, or knowledge systems in Australia.
