Why Your role Matters:

As Research Assistant, you will play a key role within the School of Biomedical Sciences in providing practical research and administrative support for project teams and key stakeholders.

The purpose of this role is to assist with the conduct of multiple funded research projects in the Translational Cancer Metabolism Laboratory, which will involve assisting in the development of a range of different cancer models and assisting postdocs, PhD students and honours students with their research.

The role reports directly to the Professor Jeff Holst, Head of the Translational Cancer Metabolism Laboratory.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Monitor and control reagent inventory, stock levels and ordering, and coordinate maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Assist with the coordination of research activities and provide research support including making reagents, setting up experiments, cell culture, explants, sample collection and animal monitoring.
  • Assist with the processing of clinical trial samples and assist with ethics applications/amendments and annual/progress reporting.
  • Work as a team to ensure experiments proceed in a timely manner and meet milestones including time management and prioritisation of competing tasks.
  • Occasionally work weekends where animal monitoring or experimental timepoints require (time in lieu or overtime will be provided for any additional hours worked).

Who You Are:

  • Bachelor of Science with Honours, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through a combination of education, training and laboratory research experience.
  • Experience working in a research laboratory, with essential skills in cancer cell/tissue culture such as plate based growth assays, with additional skills in related laboratory techniques including mouse work preferred but not essential.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail in data entry, cross referencing against project deliverables to ensure accuracy.
  • Experience working with a range of computer systems and applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and GraphPad Prism.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
