Why your role matters

The Katharina Gaus Light Microscopy Facility (KGLMF) operates within the Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC) in the Division of Research at UNSW. The facility provides support in specimen preparation and access to various light and optical instrumentations and associated expertise. The facility supports and collaborates with various research groups in the Faculties of Science, Medicine & Health and Engineering at UNSW and groups at other universities and research institutes in Australia and overseas.

The Research Officer plays a key role in supporting research projects as part of a multidisciplinary team of experts at the Katharina Gaus Light Microscopy Facility (KGLMF). The position will provide technical support and training to researchers within the core facility on various research projects. The research officer will also be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the imaging and specimen preparation spaces, including the PC2 environments.

 The role reports to the head of the KGLMF and has no direct reports.

Who you are

You hold a relevant tertiary qualification in biological or material science, or equivalent expertise through a combination of education, training, and hands-on experience with light microscopy sample preparation, imaging, and analysis.

You can demonstrate your experience providing specialised research support in light microscopy and are experienced with widefield fluorescence and high-resolution imaging techniques. You know how to use open-source tools like QuPath or commercial software such as HALO for image analysis.

You have hands-on experience preparing specimens in histology or 2D cell culture and are familiar with advanced techniques like RNA FISH (e.g., RNAscope, MERFISH). You're quick to adapt to new methods and technologies, and you’re eager to keep learning and expanding your skills.

You collaborate effectively within a team and contribute positively to group productivity. You understand and support UNSW’s values, objectives, and policies, and you’re committed to upholding both psychosocial and physical health and safety standards, including completing any necessary training.
