Why your role matters
The Recombinant Products Facility (RPF), along with Molecular Surface Interactions Lab (MSI) & Structural Biology Faciility (SBF) all provide a service and research support within the Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC) at UNSW Sydney which support Protein production & characterisation.
You will primarily be responsible for the day to day running of the MSI lab, as well as supporting the PC2 labs in RPF and SBF. This will include training of UNSW users, maintenance of instruments and OHS, including safe work procedures and risk management forms & general laboratory housekeeping. The role is also required to provide professional and technical support necessary to ensure the continuity and operation of the three labs in MWAC.
The role of the Senior Technical Officer – Proteins reports to the Manager, Recombinant Products Facility (RPF).
The Organisation
The Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC) is part of the Division of Research and sees the colocation of major research instrumentation in the University in purpose built high-grade facilities for the study of the structure and composition of biological, chemical and physical materials and also includes preparation laboratories, smaller instruments and computing facilities. In addition, MWAC provides the technical/professional support for these instruments. Analytical Centre staff members are expected to contribute to the overall success of the Centre by making a major contribution to Centre initiatives and participating fully in cooperative education and research projects.

Who you are
You have a tertiary qualification in chemistry or related laboratory discipline with subsequent technical experience in a laboratory environment or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training, and experience, as well as:
- Experience with protein interaction characterisation in solution and solid state would be desirable.
- Proven analytical, problem-solving, and operational management skills.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively and productively in a team including on the same project, collaborating across disciplines and building effective relationships with stakeholders.
- Demonstrated experience working with, training and supervising others within a research environment.
- Demonstrated experience conducting independent laboratory work with limited supervision, as well as a strong attention to detail and a rigorous approach to experiment design and documentation.
- Outstanding organisational and time management skills with demonstrated ability to deal with multiple tasks and projects, establish priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated experience operating, maintaining, and managing scientific instrumentation, and experience with IT based laboratory management systems.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
