The Opportunity

  • $85,717 - $96,992 (depending on experience) + 17% super + leave loading, pro-rata
  • 12 month fixed-term contract
  • Part-time (15 hours week)

The ICP Laboratory (in the Elemental Analysis Facility) is located in a state-of-the-art, purpose-built facility at the Kensington Campus of UNSW, part of the Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC). The facility hosts liquid chromatography systems with organic carbon detection (LC-OCD) for size separation of organic matter, ion chromatography (IC) systems for anion analysis, a carbon-nitrogen elemental analyser, a flow injection analyser (FIA), two inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometers (ICP-OES), two inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometers (ICP-MS), and associated equipment for chemical sample preparation.

Within the ICP Laboratory you will assist in sample digestion and maintenance and operation of the ICP Laboratory’s instrumentation, with an emphasis on LC-OCD, IC, dissolved carbon-nitrogen analysis, and Discrete Analyser. In addition, you’ll maintain electronic notebooks, chemical inventories and manage the health and safety documentation used in the laboratory.

This role reports to the Senior Technical Officer, ICP and has no direct reports.

Who you are

You can demonstrate your experience in research laboratory operations and managing users, materials and instruments in a discipline involving analytical chemistry, preferably specialising in chromatography or elemental analysis, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work cooperatively and flexibly within a team environment, understanding of UNSW’s policies and guidelines and health and safety.
