Designer in Residence - UNSW's Esme Timbery Creative Practice Lab

  • Location: Kensington, NSW (the successful candidate will be required to work on campus 3 days a week)


Why The Role Matters:

The Designer in Residence program at UNSW's Esme Timbery Creative Practice Lab aims to support early-career theatre and performance designers by providing studio space and design projects. This program also seeks to expose UNSW theatre and performance students to innovative professional industry practices. The Designer will have the opportunity to work with UNSW staff and students to create set and costume designs for theatre and music productions. Access to the Creative Practice Lab design studio and workshop space will allow provide support for emerging design practices and further development of design to support the teaching program. The role is expected to contribute to performance arts subjects focused on music, collaborative and solo performance-making, as well as some screen production courses.


Accountabilities:

  • Engage in individual and collaborative performance research consistent with disciplinary practice.
  • Develop performance and theatre designs for UNSW Theatre and Performance, music and screen practice-based subjects, adhering to design principles that consider sustainable sourcing, maintenance and return.
  • Provide advice on design in student productions and model professional theatre and performance industry practice.
  • Solve problems by suggesting creative solutions and workarounds for design briefs and challenges.
  • Generate a yearly report to highlight the success, outcomes and challenges of the residency program.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.

Skills and Experience: 

To be considered you will hold Australian Working Rights or Australian Citizenship. Visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment.

  • Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
  • Demonstrated evidence of innovative design practice and a willingness to share pedagogy with the School community.
  • Ability to propose new experimental and conceptual approaches in expertise.
  • Advanced time management, organisational and problem-solving skills, including the ability to meet deadlines and work across multiple projects.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly proficient in computer literacy with excellent skills in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to make sound judgements and work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting and contributing to projects and initiatives.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
