The Opportunity

Join the UNSW Faculty of Engineering, which is one of the world’s leading Engineering schools with a long and proud history of developing new technologies that have had profound positive impacts on society. The Head of Entrepreneurship is a recently created opportunity for an academic leader to develop, implement, and direct the strategy of research commercialisation for the faculty as well as promote a culture of entrepreneurship among faculty members and students.

This is a pivotal dynamic leadership position where you will foster innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives within the faculty. Your ultimate goal will be the promotion and translation of new innovations developed in the faculty being licenced to existing companies or working with other support mechanisms to increase the creation of new ventures to commercialise the innovations.

In this highly collaborative role, you will work with the UNSW Founders Program, UNSW Industry & Innovation, and the UNSW Division of Research and Enterprise to access existing support mechanisms and drive initiatives that translate research and ideas into successful ventures.

This role reports to the Deputy Dean, (Industry Engagement, Innovation and Research) and has no direct reports.

Skills and Experience

  • A PhD in a relevant field and/or equivalent research experience in an academic or non-academic environment.
  • Significant commercial experience inside a start-up as a founder, senior executive or non-executive director.
  • Significant experience in the commercialisation of research, together with a detailed understanding of the various pathways to market and impact for university technology research.
  • A demonstrated track record of raising funds within the context of early-stage ventures.
  • Highly developed networking, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills, including the ability to manage projects involving diverse interest groups/stakeholders, while exercising tact and discretion. 
  • Exceptional stakeholder management skills, with proven ability to influence senior stakeholders and secure resources.
  • Superior communication skills (written and verbal), with a strong ability to consult as well as negotiate commercial outcomes.
  • A thorough understanding of how the start-up ecosystem, government and other stakeholders interact with the tertiary education sector.
  • In-depth understanding of the University environment and research/higher education issues.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives, and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
  • Experience with formal people management of a team is highly desired.
