The Ramaciotti Centre for Genomics is a national infrastructure facility and a leader in the application and development of genomics in Australia. It is the largest genomics facility at any Australian University and is comprehensively equipped with the latest next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology, and with high throughput genotyping systems. The Centre currently analyses over 130,000 samples per annum using a range of techniques, both manually and with robotics.

The Research Assistant is responsible for performing sample QC and NGS library preparation procedures and for implementing new or modified procedures or processes under guidance.

To fulfil the requirements of the position laboratory experience in molecular biology techniques is essential, along with the ability to work with high sample volumes in a time sensitive work environment.


About the role

  • $82K - $93K plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 13 months (parental leave cover)
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role reports to the Research Manager and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Undertake quality control checks on submitted samples, independently evaluate results, prepare reports for clients and provide technical support for any enquires relating to the results.
  • Prepare samples for sequencing using a variety of complex methods, both manually and using liquid handling robots.
  • Train laboratory personnel in in the above techniques as required.
  • Inform clients on the progress of their project throughout sample quality control and sample preparation procedures.
  • Log and monitor critical stock levels ensuring resources are available for timely project completion.
  • Document laboratory procedures and write laboratory protocols for standard procedures.
  • Responsible for following the relevant quality procedures and processes in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025.
  • Ensure hazards and risks are identified and controlled for tasks, projects and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility.
  • Perform other appropriate duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director or Deputy Director/COO.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policy and procedures of the University and take all reasonable care to ensure your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself and others.

About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Relevant experience gained through a combination of education, training and experience in molecular biology, genomics or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in laboratory-based work using high-throughput molecular biology techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively to deliver results for concurrent workflows.
  • Demonstrated ability to use initiative and work both independently, as well as part of a team to deliver project outcomes.
  • Prior work experience in an accredited or regulated laboratory is desirable.
  • Good written and oral communication skills, and a high attention to detail.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
