Why your role matters:

The Strategic Projects and Operations Team (SPOT) leads the development and implementation of programmatic change initiatives that solve institution wide problems across the University in line with UNSW strategy.

Working with the Director, SPOT, the primary responsibility of the Senior Business Analyst (SPOT) is to lead the requirements gathering and business process improvements working on multiple concurrent projects.

The role focuses on close engagement with university stakeholders to gain an in-depth understanding of business processes and services, and documenting the capabilities needed to address business challenges. This role requires extensive collaboration with internal stakeholders across the University and is a business operations role (not an IT role).

The Senior Business Analyst reports to the Director of SPOT, and has no direct reports, but this may change depending on the needs of each project.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform a lead role in driving process improvements, investigating, analysing, and documenting business processes and potential solutions that contribute to ongoing process standardisation, unification, and optimisation.
  • Participate in building and executing process maps of ‘as is’ and ‘to be’ processes supported by facilitating stakeholder workshops.
  • Identify and manage process dependencies across different areas of the University whilst working on multiple concurrent projects.
  • Oversee and finalise effective communications with key stakeholders, both internal and external and provide influential input with stakeholders to achieve business outcomes.
  • Translate customer needs into documentation that can be presented to all levels of management and teams.
  • Provide mentoring, training and advice to other team members and customers with respect to business analysis as required.
  • Proactively manage complex risks, issues and financials and work with the project manager and team to ensure the appropriate solutions are in place.
  • Provide training to end-users when required, and/or create new training material and guides.
  • When required, assist the Project Manager with the planning and effort estimation of analysis activities and resource requirements.

Skills and Experience

  • Relevant tertiary qualification with a minimum of 5 years professional experience in business analysis with demonstrated high level competency in the use of professional business analysis techniques and methods. (e.g. Use Case Analysis, UML and BPMN).
  • Certified Practitioner in Business Analysis (IIBA or PMI-PBA). Desirable.
  • Demonstrated extensive experience in business process design principles including process mapping and business process re-engineering.
  • Proven facilitation skills delivering workshops to a wide range of stakeholders at all organisation levels.
  • Demonstrated lateral thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated high level project organisation skills, tools, and knowledge of the project life cycle.
  • Understanding of business processes within a tertiary education environment. Desirable.
  • Advanced consultation, influencing and negotiation skills and proven ability to engage effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders at different levels within an organisation to achieve successful outcomes.
  • High level of experience working with a range of computer systems and applications, including applications such as the MS Office suite, drawing/diagramming tools and project management tools.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
