The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences is a large, collaborative and multi-disciplinary school in the Faculty of Science at the University of New South Wales with over 150 academic, research and professional staff. In 2021, the school obtained $19M in research funding, produced over 950 scientific publications and was rated in the top four schools across UNSW in the 2021 student experience surveys. The School incorporates a broad range of disciplines, enabling comprehensive education and research in the broad fields of Earth Science, Geology, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, Climate Science, Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Marine Science.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will conduct research in the field of stink bug systematics, focusing on the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Halyomorpha halys) and allied taxa in the stink bug tribe Cappaeini. The position holder’s research will focus on species boundaries and phylogenetic relationships in the Halyomorpha genus, as well as a broad understanding of taxon identity and relationships in the Cappaeini. The incumbent will have responsibility for laboratory and analytical work on these taxa, using molecular and morphological data.
This will involve the implementation of Next Generation Sequencing methods (e.g., Ultra Conserved Elements). They will be responsible for building, curating and digitising the tissue collection for the project. The Postdoctoral Fellow will undertake laboratory work (e.g., DNA extraction, amplification, multiplexing) of the tissue of target, bioinformatics (e.g., Geneious, Phyluce), and conduct the phylogenetic analyses using model-based approaches (e.g., Maximum Likelihood, Bayesian Inference). The phylogenetic work will also involve analysis of morphological character evolution in the Halyomorpha complex and Cappaeini. The position will also be engaged in field work and overseas travel as required to work with an international team of stink bug researchers.

The role reports to Professor Gerry Cassis and has no direct reports.
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
- Conducts research on stink bug molecular phylogenetics and systematics of the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Halyomorpha halys).and allied taxa.
- Assemble tissue collection and research materials for molecular phylogenetics.
- Conduct laboratory work for Next Generation Sequencing (e.g., Ultra Conserved Elements).
- Conduct bioinformatics using phylogenomic pipelines, including R packages.
- Conduct phylogenetic analyses using model based (Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference) and R packages.
- Conduct trait evolution analyses.
- Conduct fieldwork and international visitation to museum collections.
- Contribute to the writing of scientific papers and reports for international journals and progress reporting to other researchers and partners.
- Assist with the coordination of research activities and actively contribute to research outputs to meet project milestones.
- Contribute to the preparation of research proposal submissions to funding bodies and actively seek collaboration with researchers in the field.
- Participate in and/or present at conferences and/or workshops relevant to the project as required.
- Assist with the supervision of research students in the research area where required.

Skills and Experience
To be successful in this role you will have:
- A PhD in the field of biological sciences or a combination of education, training and experience.
- Demonstrated experience in undertaking laboratory molecular techniques for Next Generation Sequencing.
- Extensive knowledge and demonstrated experience in bioinformatics, including assembling and curating sequence data.
- Demonstrated experience in undertaking molecular phylogenetic analyses.
- Knowledge and demonstrated experience in working with entomological materials.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision.
- Demonstrated track record of publications relative to opportunity.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
- Demonstrated experience working in a team-based research setting.
- Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
- Knowledge of insect systematics and heteropteran phylogenetics would be highly desirable.
- Understanding and research experience in insect morphology would be highly desirable.
- Fieldwork experience in local and remote regions would be highly desirable.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.
