The Department of Applied Mathematics at UNSW is one of the largest and most successful in Australia. It is an active centre for research, both fundamental and applied, and has particular strength in computational mathematics.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will undertake collaborative and self-directed research on an ARC-funded Discovery Project.
About the role
- Level A - $98K - $105K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
- Fixed Term – 12 months
- Full-time (35 hours per week)
The role of Postdoctoral Fellow reports to Professor Ian Sloan and Dr Q. Thong Le Gia and has no direct reports.
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
- Conduct research in the area of Computational Mathematics, collaboratively and individually.
- Create appropriate mathematical framework for uncertainty quantification and approximation problems on spheres and spherical shells.
- Create and implement algorithms based on the newly created mathematical theory.
- Assist with the coordination of research activities and actively contribute to research outputs to meet project milestones.
- Contribute to the preparation of research proposal submissions to funding bodies and actively seek collaboration with industry partners as appropriate.
- Collaborate on publications in internationally refereed journals; at least two per year over the life of the project, in leading mathematical and applications-based journals.
- Participate in and/or present at conferences and/or workshops relevant to the project as required.
- Assist with the supervision of research students in the research area where required.
- Liaise with co-investigators at UNSW, the University of York, UK
- Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
- Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.
About the successful applicant
To be successful in this role you will have:
- PhD in Mathematics, or near completion, preferably in Computational Mathematics or Stochastic Analysis.
- Strong computer programming experience, preferably with Matlab, C++, or Python.
- Proven, or demonstrated excellent potential for, an outstanding publication record, relative to opportunity
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated capacity to deliver high quality project outcomes in a timely manner.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
- Demonstrated high level analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Understanding of equity and diversity principles.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
