The School of Mathematics and Statistics currently has more than sixty continuing academic staff and more than thirty research staff as well as visiting academics.  Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW has been ranked number one in Australia for each of the past six years and has particular strengths in Oceanography, Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, Optimization, Computation, Analysis, Data Science, Statistical Applications, Statistical Analysis and Methods. In addition, the School has strong links with the UNSW Climate Change Research Centre.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will undertake collaborative and self-directed research on an ARC-funded Discovery Project titled “Data-driven multistage robust optimization”. The primary research goals are to make a major contribution to the understanding of optimization in the face of data uncertainty and to develop mathematical principles for broad classes of multi-stage robust optimization problems, to design associated data-driven numerical methods to find solutions to these problems, and to provide an advanced optimization framework to solve a wide range of real-life optimization models of multi-stage technical decision-making under uncertain environments.


About the role

  • $98K - $105K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed term – 12 months. (The position is initially offered for a 1-year fixed term, with the expectation of renewal for a 2nd year and 3rd year subject to performance and funding)
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role of Postdoctoral Fellow reports to Professor Jeya Jeyakumar and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Develop mathematical principles and tailored and scientifically justified methods for single-stage and multi-stage optimization problems in the face of data uncertainty
  • Implement numerical methods and algorithms based on the newly developed mathematical theory.
  • Perform research collaboratively and individually.
  • Liaise with co-investigators at UNSW and other international collaborators around the world.
  • Collaborate on publications in internationally refereed journals, in leading mathematical and applications-based journals.
  • Present results of research at conferences and other venues.
  • Coordinate research activities and participate in the setting of future research directions of the project.
  • Satisfactory conduct of administrative and other duties allocated by the supervisor.
  • Participate in supervision of honours and postgraduate research students.
  • Effectively engage with the broader scholarly community.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • PhD in Mathematics, or near completion, preferably in mathematical optimization or operations research.
  • Knowledge in robust optimization methods and multistage optimization techniques is highly desirable, though not essential.
  • Strong computer programming experience, preferably with Matlab, C++, or Python.
  • A strong research track record (relative to opportunity) in mathematics, as evidenced by publications in leading journals.
  • Capacity to initiate and conduct independent research.
  • Capacity to attract and effectively supervise research students.
  • Demonstrated capacity to interact successfully with the broader scholarly community.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team and contribute positively to research culture.
  • Demonstrated capacity to interact successfully with stakeholders and professional organisations.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
  • Due to covid restrictions, preference may be given to candidates already in Australia, and who have Australian residency.
