Position Summary:

The Wind Symphony Conductor (Level 8) is responsible for providing specialist expertise in artistic programming and planning of music concerts for UNSW Music Performance Unit’s annual program.

This position is open for expressions of interest opportunities from qualified individuals.

 

This role will:

• In consultation with the relevant manager, nominate repertoire to develop programs for UNSW large ensemble, taking into account financial limitations, instrumentation, and musicianship standards of the ensemble.

• Contribute artistic expertise to special projects as required.

• Undertake all musical preparation and familiarisation of the agreed programmed large ensemble works and their scores.

• Implement agreed programming within UNSW large ensemble’s schedule.

• Direct and conduct weekly large ensemble rehearsals, instructing and communicating the artistic vision for the repertoire to the performers.

• Perform publicly and conduct the large ensemble in concert. Lead the large ensemble members and execute conducting responsibilities at a high standard of performance.

• Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

 

A person engaged is generally expected to have the following skills and experience:

• Relevant Postgraduate qualifications preferred in music or equivalent specialist experience in conducting and directing at a professional level. Minimum required qualifications: BMUS (Performance) and BMUS ED (Music Education).

• Proven experience successfully managing artistic processes supporting organisational objectives.

• Subject matter expertise in large ensemble repertoire and of the Australian classical music industry.

• Outstanding communication and relationship management skills, with demonstrated experience in maintaining successful internal and external networks.

 

NOTE:

The shortlisted candidates may be invited to conduct live and rehearse UNSW Wind Symphony infront of the interview panel as part of the assessment for this role. This may occur in Round 2 or 3 of the interview process, and repertoire will be selected by UNSW. Adequate time to prepare and familiarise themselves with the scores will be provided to the candidates in advance of this taking place.
