The Faculty of Science teaches approximately 7000 full-time student equivalents, with an academic staff of approximately 500 and general staff of 300. The Faculty is one of the largest and most complex faculties of UNSW Sydney. It comprises the School of Aviation, Biological Earth and Environmental Science (BEES), Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BABS), Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Mathematics and Statistics, Psychology, and Physics. It also includes several major Research Centres and field stations.

The Educational Developer, Nexus Program will assist in the implementation and evaluation of teaching methods, technologies and techniques developed or encouraged by the Pro Vice-Chancellor Education & Student Experience Portfolio by the Team.


About the role

  • $113k - $123k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 8 months (MAT Leave cover)
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role reports to the Faculty Educational Development Manager, Nexus Program and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Support academics in the Faculty through:
    • Development, design, implementation and evaluation of digital resources and activities for blended, hybrid and online delivery;
    • Assisting in the adoption of institution-wide educational initiatives and other new teaching approaches and technologies; and
    • Adapting institutional solutions to the Faculty context where necessary;
  • Collaborate with other members of the Nexus Program team to ensure consistent approaches to the implementation of new initiatives across schools and faculties.
  • Maintain an understanding of current pedagogical methods and tools, to help identify innovative solutions that will enhance the student learning environment and academic teaching capabilities.
  • Contribute to the operation of the UNSW Education Co-op by acting as a consultant for educators across the university who visit the Co-op for help or advice
  • Provide advice, support and troubleshooting to academics on the implementation of university-wide initiatives, and on other effective digital tools and techniques for achieving their specific learning goals.
  • Contribute to the delivery of training, resources, communications, programs and events related to Nexus Program and other teaching and learning initiatives in the Faculty and University.
  • Provide accurate and regular updates to the Educational Development Manager, Nexus Program regarding the progress of assigned projects.

About the successful applicant
(Selection criteria)

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A tertiary degree in a relevant area such as STEMM, education, or educational technologies with a depth of subsequent relevant experience in educational design, or other equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in educational design and/or development in one or more of the following areas: 1) Assessment and feedback, 2) Teaching practice pedagogy, 3) Digital education, 4) Program level learning and employability, 5) Course design and renewal.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of common Learning Management Systems and tools for creating digital educational resources.
  • Experience developing pedagogically appropriate digital educational resources.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of pedagogy, course design and blended learning.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering high quality customer service, preferably in a University context.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
  • Demonstrated success working effectively and collaboratively on initiatives with a range of people at different levels within an organisation.
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
