Why Your Role Matters 

The Analytics Engineer holds a key role in the Educational Data & Insights team within the Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academic Quality (DVCAQ) portfolio in developing end-to-end reporting solutions to measure UNSW student experience and education outcomes. The role leads the end-to-end delivery of Azure Databricks data pipelines, data modelling, ETL/ELT processes, and PowerBI dashboards.  

The myExperience Survey at UNSW is an end-of-session survey designed to gather student feedback on their individual courses and teaching experiences. This role has been funded to work on a rebuild of the myExperience reporting architecture to make the reporting easier to use and easier to maintain.  

The role is funded for 12 months, reports to the Manager, Educational Data & Insights, and has no direct reports. 

Your responsibilities 

In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining Azure Databricks data pipelines and resilient data architectures, ensuring robust data quality, integrity, and security throughout the student experience reporting process. They will also develop user-focused PowerBI dashboards, manage end-to-end data solutions, and create comprehensive documentation to support database design, visualisation, and permissions management. 

Additionally, the position involves leading best practices in data governance, optimising system performance, and fostering effective communication and collaboration with colleagues across UNSW. The role requires staying informed of relevant technological advances to enhance data collection, integration, and presentation, ultimately supporting initiatives that improve the student experience. 

Who You Are 

We are looking for someone who is aligned with UNSW’s vision and values, with great communication and organization skills and who comes with: 

  • Demonstrated expertise in designing and implementing robust data architecture 

  • A relevant qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science or related field (not essential but highly valuable) 

  • Proven technical expertise in the design and development of databases and data models, data mining and principles of building robust data pipelines. Experience working within Agile delivery environments 

  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, git and familiarity with PowerBI (but could be other visualisation tools). Experience with Azure, Databricks, Large Language Models solutions development and third-party API integrations is a strong advantage 

  • Demonstrated ability to define, develop and implement testing procedures, including knowledge of automated data quality checks 

  • Proven ability to work proactively and effectively in collaborative, interdisciplinary environments, engaging stakeholders to deliver clear, user-focused reporting solutions. 

We are open to people wanting to work compressed hours. This is a hybrid role, operating during standard business hours; fully remote options are not available.
