Senior Research Associate in Computational Intelligence

Employment type:   Full-time, 35 hours per week. Fixed-term contract
Duration: 18 months
Remuneration: Level B from $ 123,620 per annum plus 17% super

You will join a high-performing interdisciplinary team with clear aims to break new scientific ground at the interface of artificial intelligence, ethics and autonomous military systems. Delivering on an externally funded project you will use the skills identified in your position description to achieve clear goals, while negotiating the interface of your contribution with other team members. You may have the opportunity to attend benchmarking events in the US and will work closely with the team at UNSW and a team at Arizona State University. You will grow new skills, practice working in high-performing teams that include computer scientists and legal and ethical scholars, and use a mix of your imagination, creativity and technical skills to break new grounds and reach over-the-horizon impact. You will be a highly trusted individual and will sign on a confidentiality agreement. Who You Are (skills and experience): 

  • A PhD in computational intelligence, machine learning or a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in working with efficient search methods (such as Bayesian Optimisation, Monte Carlo Tree Search, Multi-objective Evolutionary Search, Surrogate Methods) for very large scale and computationally expensive problems with highly rugged landscapes.
  • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership.
  • High level communication skills and ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.

Eligibility: 
The successful candidate will be required to undertake pre-employment checks prior to commencement in this role. The checks that will be undertaken are listed in the Position Description. The successful candidate will be required to work from the UNSW Canberra campus. To be successful in this role it is imperative that you hold Australian Citizenship.
