About the Faculty:

We are currently seeking expressions of interest for a variety of academic positions across the Faculty of Arts, Design & Architecture (ADA) because we are building and expanding. The Faculty is guided by our ADA2051 vision: through creativity, collaboration and inclusion we seek and solve problems to improve life on earth.

Why The Role Matters:

The position builds on the Faculty of Arts, Design and Architecture’s Indigenous Strategy and the commitment to ensuring genuine equity, inclusion, and a supportive faculty for First Nations staff and students at UNSW ADA. The position is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants only. UNSW has obtained an exemption under section 126 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW) to designate and recruit professional and academic positions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons only, to fulfil UNSW’s goal of a representative workforce rate. The position is an Education Focussed role (EF). This enables academics to specialise in education and devote their time to delivering high-quality teaching and pursuing initiatives to enhance the educational experience of our students.   


Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and lead courses, tutorials, studio, field visits and/or other relevant classes in the discipline of city planning (at both an undergraduate and postgraduate level as applicable).
  • Contribute to the design and development of approaches to teaching and learning which prioritise Indigenous voices.
  • Help shape students who reflect and engage deeply with the process of unlearning and relearning (decolonising) and Indigenous Knowledge perspectives.
  • Develop cultural awareness and the integration of values of Country within city planning in meaningful and appropriate ways.
  • Develop a teaching philosophy and a critically reflective teaching practice that inspires student learning.
  • Contribute to the design and development of learning activities and resources, assessment and feedback using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments.
  • Contribute to the design, development, review, and administration of curriculum, including academic quality assurance and engagement with professional accreditation/organisation bodies such PIA.

Selection Criteria:

Level B -

  • A Masters degree in a related discipline, and/or relevant professional experience
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully teaching at a university level
  • Evidence of and/or preparedness to undertake professional development of teaching practice
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness and capacity to work effectively and sensitively with students, particularly on issues related to learning in individual and group situations and cross-cultural factors in the student experience
  • Demonstrated capacity to lead by example in supporting equal opportunity and equity, diversity and inclusion as they relate to staff and students
  • Willingness to cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

Level C -

  • A PhD in city planning or a closely related discipline, and/or relevant professional experience related to city planning.
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully coordinating teaching at a university level.
  • Evidence of leading innovation in course design and delivery at a university level.
  • Knowledge of a range of pedagogical approaches with the skill, experience and creativity to develop this over time.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to work and influence across disciplines, schools, industry and professional accreditation bodies.
