The Electron Microscope Unit (EMU) is a central research and research support unit within the Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC) at UNSW Sydney. The resources of the EMU are available to the entire UNSW Sydney community as well as industry and other external clients. These resources include instruments for the study of structure and composition of biological, chemical and physical materials as well as highly trained and experienced staff who provide technical and scientific support. The EMU is a founding node of Microscopy Australia, which is the peak body for nanostructural analysis in Australia.

Reporting to the Associate Director of the Electron Microscope Unit, Daniel Luque, you’ll provide technical support and training to biological users of the EMU, ensuring high quality data acquisition and operating transmission electron microscopes and scanning electron microscopes handling biological and soft-matter specimen preparation related to these techniques within a PC2 environment.

Who you are

You have a relevant tertiary qualification in biological science and or experience in biological microscopy and imaging of soft materials, and can demonstrate the following Skills and Experience:

  • Microscopy Experience: Experience in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and/or scanning electron microscopy (SEM) within a relevant biological field.
  • Sample Preparation: Experience in electron microscopy specimen preparation techniques with focus in life science applications.
  • Instrument Operation: Experience operating TEMs and/or SEMs.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication, effective stakeholder liaison.
  • Collaboration: Ability to work productively within a team.
  • Alignment with UNSW Values: Understanding and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives, and guidelines.
  • Health & Safety Awareness: Knowledge of psychosocial and physical safety responsibilities.
  • Desirable:
  • Demonstrated experience in embedding and ultramicrotomy techniques.
  • Previous experience in a PC2 laboratory and/or cell culture.
  • Experience with Thermofisher Scientific TEM operation.
