The Senior Solutions Architect creates, develops, and delivers solutions architecture artefacts and technical designs from inception to operationalisation that meet the needs of the business.

UNSW is investing in establishing contemporary fit-for-purpose data storage and management capabilities to enable academic and research excellence, support UNSW's strategic priorities, and be a top 50 global university.

In partnership with UNSW IT and PVC Research Infrastructure, the multi-year strategic Research Data Experience (RDE) program will uplift research data management functions, including policy development and alignment, to provide an end-to-end experience across the entire research data lifecycle.

The Senior Solutions Architect will work closely with the Lead Solution Architect, Enterprise Architect, Technology team and the PVC Research Infrastructure to identify options and design holistic research data capabilities, including policy development and alignment, to provide an end-to-end experience across the entire research data lifecycle delivering future-ready, fit-for-research, secure, sustainable, cost-effective, solutions in alignment with UNSW strategy, enterprise architecture principles and framework. 

The incumbent will ensure solution outcomes balance functional, service quality and systems management requirements while being cognisant of the evolving research needs and business processes.

The position reports to the Lead Solution Architect – Research Solutions and has no direct reports.

The Ideal candidate will have:

  • Extensive experience in end-to-end large-scale data storage and management solutions, desirably for research, including information and data systems/platforms, data and metadata management and discovery, highly sensitive data and privacy-preserving systems, and movement, integration and linkage.
  • Strong understanding of research lifecycle, strategy, policies and practices, challenges and opportunities and infrastructure and technology needs across different scientific disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing composable solution architecture, system design and solution ownership , security, integration patterns, modern information/data models and requirements in a hybrid and cloud-centric environment (e.g., AWS & Azure).
  • Comprehensive analytical and problem-solving skills, with proven ability to understand the underlying problem, conceptualise complex information, and manage ambiguity to deliver robust design outcomes within agreed timelines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills, including the ability to structure and articulate messages, develop effective relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels with varying expectations, viewpoints and interests.
  • Proven experience in integration architecture, including iPaaS, API Gateways, ETL, ESB and related technologies (e.g., REST, JSON, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of Cyber security industry standards, regulations, and compliance requirements relevant to Education institutions, including sensitive research data .
  • Experience solutioning for CI/CD and DevOps pipelines for both application development and infrastructure as code.
  • Demonstrated experience in system modelling, total cost of owenership, cost optimisation, performance and data / information

The following will be highly desirable:

  • Understanding of the university sector and knowledge of national and international research infrastructure settings.
  • Experience with data analysis platforms and applying digital solutions in health data research, research translation, or health service environment.
  • Data warehousing - storage, integration, metadata, reporting (themes, trends, aggregations, usage, compliance reporting).
