About the LPL Program

The Program is available to Law dual degree students (LLB) and Juris Doctor (JD) students in their first year of Law School. The program provides first-year law students with an opportunity to meet face to face with senior law students and other first-years to talk about law, study, and success at university. The aim of the program is to develop students’ understanding of legal concepts and skills needed for the study of Law. The program is available free of charge to any student who needs it, and students with English as a second language are encouraged to join the program as soon as classes begin.

First-year students meet in groups of three to eight with a senior law student for an hour once a week during the term. Peer Leader sessions commence from week 3 until week 9 excluding Reading Week (Flexibility Week). In week 10, Leaders run 1 hr exam preparation workshops.

The Peer Leaders are senior students from both the Undergraduate and JD programs. Peer Leaders need to have a solid academic record but more importantly are empathetic, work well with others and are good listeners. Peer Leaders are not de-facto lecturers, their role is to facilitate discussion, encouraging the students to work through problems and issues amongst themselves.

Peer Leaders are recruited throughout the year. New Peer Leaders receive a short orientation to the program and there is ongoing support offered via scheduled meetings with the Program Manager and other tutors in weeks 5, 8 and 11.

The casual pay rate is Level 3/Step 1: $47.0375 (including casual loading)
