The Ramaciotti Centre for Genomics is a national infrastructure facility and a leader in the application and development of genomics in Australia. It is the largest genomics facility at any Australian University and is comprehensively equipped with the latest next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology, with single-cell genomics platforms and with high throughput microarray systems. The Centre’s purpose is to deliver high quality genomic data to its clients and position UNSW as a leader in the field of genomics.

The Research Assistant position is primarily responsible for preparing samples for genotyping by microarray. The position also provides regular cover for the Sanger sequencing service and will assist the team who provide microbiome analysis services by next generation sequencing during periods of high demand.

To fulfil the requirements of the position laboratory experience in molecular biology techniques is essential, along with the ability to work with high sample volumes and liquid handling platforms in a time sensitive work environment.  


About the role

  • $75K - $84K plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 12 months
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role of Research Assistant reports to the Deputy Director/Centre Manager and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Undertake quality control checks on samples, independently evaluate results and prepare reports for clients.
  • Prepare samples for Axiom genotyping analysis using both manual and automated methods.
  • Microarray run set-up on the GeneTitan instrument.
  • Preparation of samples for Sanger sequencing and set up of sequencing runs.
  • Provide support to the Illumina sequencing team when required, including preparation of samples for microbiome (16S, 18S, ITS) analysis by Illumina sequencing using manual and automated methods.
  • Log and monitor critical stock levels ensuring resources are available for timely project completion.
  • Follow relevant quality procedures and processes in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025.
  • Perform other appropriate duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director or Manager of the Centre.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Degree in molecular biology, genetics or a related discipline, an Honours degree is desirable. This position requires a good understanding of the principles of molecular biology.
  • Laboratory-based work experience using high-throughput molecular biology techniques is essential.
  • The ability to manage time effectively to deliver results for concurrent workflows.
  • Ability to use initiative and work both independently, as well as part of a team to deliver project outcomes.
  • Work experience in an accredited or regulated laboratory is desirable.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
