UNSW Medicine is a national leader in learning, teaching and research, with close affiliations to a number of Australia’s finest hospitals, research institutes and health care organisations. The Prince of Wales Clinical School which is located at Prince of Wales Hospital and Lowy Cancer research Centre is part of the biomedical precinct at UNSW Sydney supporting virtually all contemporary forms of biomedical research. The school is seeking to appoint a Research Assistant who will work in Leukaemia research in the newly established Molecular Mechanisms in Leukemia laboratory at the Lowy Cancer research centre. The laboratory aims to leverage a combination of molecular biology, genomics, stem cell biology and bioinformatics techniques to investigate leukaemia.
The Research Assistant will provide technical and research assistance to senior research staff in activities associated with various research projects. As a Research Assistant your specific responsibilities will include assist in conducting experiments, data collection and data management; assist with data analysis, interpretation and train junior research staff/students; assist with preparation of ethics application, grant application and manuscript for publication; arrange meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
To be successful in the role you will have
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences (or a related/relevant discipline) or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training or experience
- Demonstrated experience in basic laboratory skills, including mammalian cell culture techniques, and basic molecular biology techniques (including PCR, DNA/RNA/Protein isolation, agarose gel electrophoresis, western blots, cloning and basic microbiology)
- Experience in molecular biology techniques specifically involving DNA and RNA sequencing, as well as in genomics / high-throughput sequencing will be highly regarded
- Must be able to maintain laboratory records, including lab notebooks, and collect and organise data
- Excellent communication, organization and interpersonal skills plus working knowledge in Microsoft Office tools (including Excel and Word)
Must have Australian work rights for the duration of the position.
