Reporting to the Senior Business Development Manager, you will develop, maintain and leverage robust external and strategic relationships with relevant industry, government and community sectors, and use strong internal relationships across the University to generate knowledge exchange pathways, negotiate partnerships for the University and achieve key revenue targets.  

As an expert in a relevant sector, you will operate as a key interface between the University and external partners and will drive complex negotiations and deliver on significant academic and research partnerships (including contract, collaborative research and consulting). These roles engage with staff, researchers and academics to provide strategic support, coaching, guidance and education to promote knowledge exchange and the resources available to market and facilitate knowledge exchange programs and initiatives. Key relationships include the Knowledge Exchange team, Enterprise Legal, Entrepreneurship team, Research Division, External Relations Division, Philanthropy Division, Faculty Executive teams and Faculty based researchers and academics.

The Business Development team, within Knowledge Exchange (KE) is focused on developing and delivering on research partnerships (contract, collaborative, consulting) and IP commercialisation (licenses, spinouts/start-ups, Intellectual Property), based on UNSW knowledge and capability. The team is comprised of a diverse range of sector expertise to facilitate the attainment of the University’s knowledge exchange goals. These sectors are broadly grouped under Engineering & ICT, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Humanities & Social Sciences.  

About the successful applicant

You have a relevant qualification in Business and/or Law and/or knowledge gained through relevant experience as well as:-

  • An outstanding track record of achievement in developing partnerships and closing business deals including research partnerships (contract, collaborative, consulting) and IP commercialisation (licenses, spinouts/startups, Intellectual Property), executive education/training and/or social impact and policy/law reform.  
  • Significant experience and value-add networks in sectors related to Business and Law disciplines both locally and internationally as aligned with UNSW’s research strengths.  
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team to achieve key performance indicators including substantial revenue targets. 
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver training and capability development to a research and/or academic community. 
  • Proactive and motivated with strong stakeholder and relationship management skills. 
  • Superior negotiation skills and persuasive communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and writing business cases for industry, government and external end user partner audiences
