The role of Lecturer will hold a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or equivalent and have research experience in both fundamental and applied soft materials science with focus on applications in biotechnology and biomedicine, and exhibiting a capacity to develop an independent research portfolio. Specific areas of interest include soft matter physics and rheology, polymeric biomaterials chemistry, biological assembly, and biofabrication. They will also have strong communication and organizational skills and be able to demonstrate an ability to deliver high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

The role of Lecturer reports to the Head of School for teaching, research and administrative duties, and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

Each course taught will be reviewed using the University’s standard student evaluation questionnaire and a satisfactory rating or better will be required to ensure that the student experience in all classes taught is positive. Performance in research will be judged by scholarly output, such as publications, higher degree research supervision and research grant income.

The role of Lecturer is expected to make active contributions to the teaching effort by the School and to carry out activities to maintain and develop his/her scholarly research and professional activities in the area of soft materials science and engineering at a level commensurate with a Go8 Australian University in the top 50 internationally.

All activities will be monitored and regularly reviewed by the Head of School to ensure that duties are carried out competently and conscientiously.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Undertake independent research, publishing results in international refereed journals, presenting research at colloquia and at national and international conferences, and collaborating with other researchers nationally and internationally.
  • Actively contribute to teaching and development, course coordination, curriculum design, course administration and quality assurance for the core stream curriculum in materials science and engineering, drawing on recent practical and professional experiences.
  • Liaise effectively with the materials science and engineering academic and industry sectors in relation to research and learning and teaching.
  • Maintain effective and collegial relations with relevant teams of staff in the School and collaborate in the development of courses offered into other School programs.
  • Contribute to collaborative teaching and curriculum development projects in the general area of materials science and engineering.
  • Use developments in blended learning and other contemporary pedagogical practices to inform course design and delivery.
  • Participate in pre-identified non-teaching commitments as outlined in the work planning process.
  • Be active in seeking research funding and recruitment of higher degree research students.
  • Be active in the dissemination of research outcomes, in particular through publication of papers in leading international refereed journals and attendance at international conferences.
  • Undertake supervision of higher degree research students and final year honours students.
  • Work collaboratively with others at UNSW to improve teaching within the School.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated research experience in both fundamental and applied soft Materials Science with focus on applications in biotechnology and biomedicine.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop quality curriculum in disciplines such as soft materials, biofabrication, and formulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach in the discipline areas of Materials Science and Engineering at undergraduate and postgraduate coursework levels.
  • Demonstrated strong track record of research as evidenced by publication papers and presentation of seminars.
  • Evidence of the ability or potential to attract research funding from competitive research bodies and other sources.
  • Demonstrated experience in student supervision including but not limited to PhD, Honours, Masters, Vacation Scholars projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in course or program coordination and administration.
  • Demonstrated experience in the innovative use of technology in teaching.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, to meet deadlines and to prioritise competing demands.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • High level of interpersonal skills and demonstrated competence in dealing with a wide range of people.
  • Ability to develop and promote the discipline area of materials science and engineering at UNSW and to work in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to the administration in an academic environment.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
