The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) examines the natural environment, including life, from the core of the Earth to its upper atmosphere, deep in time through to the present and modelling towards the future. Research within BEES is clustered within four general thematic areas:


  • Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
  • Climate Science
  • Environmental Change, Sustainability and Resources
  • Paleoenvironments and Earth History

The School of BEES has over 100 academic staff, over 170 research students and 60 honours students.

About the role

  • $85K-$91K plus 9.5% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term until date – 12 months
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Advisor provides high level, effective and efficient health and safety compliance and auditing support to the School.

A key focus of this role will be to work closely with the HSE Coordinator to ensure the creation and implementation of a comprehensive School-wide health and safety action plan that ensures the School meets all its health and safety legislative requirements. In addition, the HSE Advisor will embrace and champion a culture of safety within the School whilst we deliver on our 2025 strategy

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Relevant WHS tertiary qualification or equivalent level of knowledge gained through training and experience in a research environment.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the NSW Work Health & Safety Act 2011; NSW Work Health and Safety Regulation 2017.
  • Proven background in WHS in a scientific research environment and demonstrated ability to implement WHS legislation, guidelines and management practices in the workplace.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to consult, communicate and implement WHS projects within all levels of staff across the School.
  • Strong time management and organisational skills including the ability to establish priorities, work well under pressure to manage and prioritise multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
  • Knowledge of handling and disposal procedures for laboratory waste and other hazardous waste materials.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with all aspects of an active science research environment.
  • Proven ability to manage high-volume workload and meet critical deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently as well as be effective as part of a team.
  • Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.
