The School of Psychology is located in the Faculty of Science and has over 40 full-time members of academic staff and 17 general staff. It has an operating budget of over $12 million and additional research funding of over $15 million per annum. The School is very active in research, with most staff holding external research funding. The School has extensive laboratory facilities for both research and teaching.


About the role

  • $72K - $82K plus 9.5% Superannuation and annual leave loading less than 2 years fixed term)>
  • Fixed Term – 12 months
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The appointed Research Assistant will provide scientific support to a Linkage Project that aims to improve the accuracy of face identification decisions in applied settings and will work closely with our research partners at the Australian Passport Office. The position will involve running experiments on passport officers, super-recognisers and other expert groups, using behavioural measures and eye-tracking technology. The role of Research Assistant reports to Dr. David White and Dr. Alice Towler and has no direct reports.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Hold a recognised degree in Psychology or a comparable qualification.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in writing scientific research reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and part of a team.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting a research project (including experiment design, ethics applications, data collection, and record keeping).
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with research participants and partners in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting statistical analyses (e.g. t-tests, correlations and ANOVAs) in SPSS or another statistical package.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
